How to DIY on a Budget

Need a Christmas gift for a mom? Whether that is your mom, or your children's mom, a handmade Christmas gift is a great way to go. There are some inexpensive and thoughtful gifts that you can make yourself to bring that Mom in your life some Christmas cheer.

An etched picture frame

Using some etching cream or a sand etching blaster, a reusable stencil, and a nice picture frame that is mostly glass, you can make a truly customized gift Christmas gift for that mom in your life.

Remove the glass from your picture frame, and place your hand made or store bought stencils onto the glass. You can use phrases such as simple as Merry Christmas and the year, or to commemorate some significant event that is portrayed in the picture. If you have a nice picture of the Mom, and her child or children, even just a simple etched "Mom" works well to bring a tear to the eye.

Either use your glass etching cream or sand blaster and make an even etch, all over the stencil. Following the manufacturer's instructions, etch the glass, and then wash or rinse the etching medium off of the frame. Even if you don't have a significant picture to add to the frame, the frame alone is a great gift. You can even make your own stencils using the tips below.

Vinyl wall art

Vinyl wall art is the latest craze in home decor. You can use some permanent, adhesive backed vinyl to make some beautiful wall art with either a relevant phrase, a monogram, or the last name of the household. This does take using a die-cut machine that you own, or can borrow from one of your scrap book friendly friends. You can also buy some adhesive backed vinyl used specifically for their machine, and some contact paper to make the process easier to apply. You can use multiple colors to make some great designs for Christmas, or to match the decor of that special mom in your life. To make a unified gift, use the 'negative' from the wall art you have made, and use it to etch the glass of your picture frame.

Children's art

If the mom you are making this hand made gift for is your wife, then having your children make some colored pictures, or use some of their current art from school or day care, and use it to wrap the gift that you are using. If you would like to preserve the art, make sure that you scan the pictures first, and then print them out and use that as wrapping paper.

For the gift itself, well framed art with your children's signatures, or a craft that they have made is a great, and thoughtful gift for that special mom in your life. Add some pictures of them doing the craft for that special touch.
