DIY How to Install Bathroom Shower Doors

Viktoria Carrella
Bathroom shower doors are not only more convenient than a shower curtain, but they also add a decorative touch to the bathroom. From keeping water off the floors to easier cleaning, shower doors add a whole new dimension to any restroom. There are a few things you will need for the job, but the most important variation between bathrooms is the length of track needed to cover your existing bathtub.

Materials Needed to Install Bathroom Shower Doors

Track set and shower doors
Tape measure
Caulk gun and clear caulk
Automatic punch
Phillip and flathead screwdrivers
Plastic mallet
3/16 masonry drill bit
Pencil
7/32 and 3/16 twist bit
Hacksaw
Utility knife

Step 1:

Measure the length of your shower area, and use a hacksaw to cut the base of the track to fit the area you have to work with between the two bathtub stall walls. Put the track on the tub top and use the tape measure to make sure it is centered.

Step 2:

Attached the track of the bathroom shower doors to the tub by drilling a screw in every 6 to 8 inches.

Step 3:

Hold one jamb piece against the side of the shower that will hold the shower door, so that the lower piece fits into the track. Stick the pencil inside the jamb screw holes to mark the wall, and then remove the jamb. Use the automatic punch to create screw holes in the wall.

Step 4:

Use the 3/16 masonry drill bit to create holes at each automatic punch hole. Place a plastic wall anchor that came with the track set into the wall using the plastic mallet. Hold the jamb to the wall and align the anchors with the screw holes, then drive the provided screws into the holes.

Step 5:

Lift the door so that the attached hinge is positioned to swing outwards, and then slip the hinged rail into the jamb. Hold the door and drill four holes with the 7/32 inch bit into the hinge rail and the mounted jamb. Use the Phillips head screws that are provided in the set to hold in place.

Step 6:

Slip the strike rail onto the remaining side jamb, then hold the rail and jamb while closing the door until it lines up with the base track. Adjust the jamb so it is flush to the wall and then mark the wall and remove the jamb. Realign the jamb with your mark on the wall and drill holes for the plastic anchors. Screw the jamb to the wall in the anchors.
