If you'd like to be the Mad Hatter for Halloween this year, here's how you can create this "Alice in Wonderland" character's costume.
First you'll need the Mad Hatter's hat. You can buy this huge oversized hat at a Halloween store OR you can make your own. You can get a big, old top-hat and paint it green. You can also cut and shape one out of camping bed foam. Then, use a piece of colored (any color will do, bright color is my recommendation since the movie and his outfit was colorful) ribbon and tie around the hat. On an index card, write "in this style 10/6" in Sharpie. (That's what was written on his hat in the movie.) Stick the index card down into the ribbon like the Mad Hatter had in the movie. You can see it here.
Unless you can spray gray hair color on your own unruly hair, you'll need a short, white, bushy wig to resemble the Mad Hatter's hair. The hair should stick out from underneath the hat on both the left and right sides.
Glue on thick, fake, gray or black eye brows or use gray or black Halloween makeup to paint some on.
Attach a huge rubber nose to resemble the Mad Hatter's nose. You can find these in Halloween stores and most Halloween aisles.
Now let's talk about the clothing. You'll need a blue bow tie, green button up shirt (white would work too), an orange, olive, or tan/brown trench coat-type jacket, and green pants. If you don't have these in your closet, ask your parents, friends, and check the thrift stores.
To finish this Mad Hatter's costume outfit, you'll need huge clown shoes. It should be easy to find these at a party store or costume aisle in any store. Find shoes that match the color of your outfit.
If you'd like to accessorize your costume, you could carry around a tea cup, or even better, have your girlfriend or a female friend dress up as Alice!
