First, know that when beginning a meditation practice it is quite common to feel as if you can not rid yourself of the outside world. While we may set up our meditation practice in a very serene and conducive location, the fact remains, our minds will wander through the issues and thoughts of the day. Interesting enough, meditation teachers often suggest that if we focus on our tongues we can almost always prevent the over activity of our brains from occurring. The key is to relax the tongue on exhalation and focus on breathing and relaxing each time. Before long, your focus will no longer be on the lists of "to do" chores.
The other common complaint of the meditating student involves the control of noise. When beginning your meditation processes, it is crucial to the success of your meditation that you remove all objects, persons and things, which may cause noise, from your immediate surroundings. Unfortunately, as we all know, there are some noises we can not get rid of, such as street noise or birds chirping. When these outside noises are persistent and uncontrollable, try using them in your meditation process by focusing on the regular pattern of sounds.
Another common issue for new students of meditation is the issue with falling asleep. Because sleep involves moving into your brain's delta waves, it is very common to fall asleep when sitting up in meditation. For this reason, try meditating with your eyes open or leaning your back against a wall to prevent your body from slouching when sleep may fall upon you. If all else fails, it is okay to sleep. Remember, the more often you practice meditation, the less likely you are to fall asleep as your mind will learn to adjust to the transformation of state without moving into a delta wave state.
Meditation has long been a successful method in which to relax, recovery from stress and improve overall health. For many beginning students of meditation, the art and technique can be quite frustrating. Learning to overcome these simple beginner complications will lead you into a path of perfection your meditation technique and into a new form of personal discovery.
