DIY: Painting a Chimney Cap

A painted chimney cap can better withstand rust if it is painted. Painting your chimney cap is also an excellent chance to give the exterior of your house a finishing pop of color. Glossy black paint is a classic, but consider a bold red or hunter green for an unexpected twist.

Plan on completing this project when the chimney is not in use: late spring or very early fall is a great time to do any roof improvements or repairs. Also, it's important to have a professional clean and inspect your chimney once a year to prevent fires, so be on the lookout for any problems you may need addressed.

Step 1: Remove the chimney cap from the top of the chimney. You may need a screwdriver to remove any screws that hold the chimney cap in place.

TIP: Take this opportunity to clean the screen underneath the chimney cap, removing any dirt and debris.

Step 2: Clean any soot or dust with a nylon scrub brush and warm soapy water. Dry the chimney cap carefully.

Step 3: Sand away any rust spots using a fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any resulting paint dust with a slightly damp rag. Make sure the chimney cap is completely dry before continuing.

Step 4: Apply a coat of spray primer to the entire surface of the chimney cap. Start with one side and cover that side with one even coat. Wait for that coat to dry slightly, then reposition the cap. This will ensure that you achieve a nice even finish with no drips. Let the primer dry completely before continuing.

TIP: It is important to choose a rust resistance spray primer made for metal. If possible, you should also find a primer that is made to withstand heat.

Step 5: Apply a coat of spray paint in your chosen color, using the same method you used to apply the primer. Apply a second coat after the first coat has dried to assure an even color.

Step 6: Reinstall the chimney cap over the chimney.
