DIY Party Hats for New Year's Eve

Tracy DeLuca
New Year's Eve is a time of parties and celebrations. Some of the different ways that we celebrate here in the USA are fireworks, counting down and wearing party hats. Buying hats can get expensive. In this tough financial time, you may want to make your own hats to save some money. You can also use the hat making as part of the festivities at your party. Both children and adults can enjoy crafting their own hats! Here are directions for making two different types of hats.

Paper Party Hat

Things you will need:

Paper - large sheets

Crepe paper and/or tissue paper

Paint

Brushes

Water and containers

Pencils

Stapler

Glue

Glitter

Other decorations as desired.

Instructions:

Take a large sheet of paper and decorate it with bright painted colors and allow it to dry. Roll the top two corners in towards the middle. Overlap the two sides to make a cone shape and staple it together. Staple it in such a way that it will not unroll. Cut away any excess at the bottom to make it an even, round shape. Cut it down as needed for sizing. Add tissue paper streamers to the top of your hat and glue on glitter and other decorations.

You can also purchase plain party hats to decorate that are cheaper than already decorated hats.

Visor Hats

Things you will need:

Plain plastic visor hats in various sizes

Vinyl numbers and stars

Tacky glue or a low temp glue gun

Tinsel pipe cleaners

Stickers

You want to wear the visor upside down on the top of your head so that it looks like a crown. Keep this in mind as you decorate so that your decorations do not end up upside down! Glue the numbers 2, 0, 0, and 9 along with stars onto your visor or use stickers. Make your pipe cleaners into curley Qs by using a pencil or dowel and wrapping them around it. Then, glue the pipe cleaners to the rear of the visor so that they stick up at the edge. Decorate with any stickers or items that you wish.
