DIY: How to Make a Pine Cone Wreath

K. Jessie Austin
A nice holiday or winter craft project is to make a pinecone wreath, especially if you live somewhere with an abundance of pine trees.

The number of pinecones you will need depends on the size of them and also on the size of the wreath you want to make. On average this will be around 35-50 pinecones. It's best to collect more than you think you will need so your wreath doesn't end up looking sparse, and you don't end up stopping half way through your project to hunt for more.

You will also need a grapevine wreath, a hot glue gun and extra glue sticks, a can of white or off white spray paint (unless you want your wreath to be natural color), newspaper or some other sort of drop cloth to cover your work area, gloves. Most of these supplies can be found at a craft store. You can even buy your own pinecones if there are no pine trees in your area.

Making the actual wreath is very simple. The pinecones can be kind of sharp so it helps to use gloves so you are not poking yourself over and over. All you have to do it hot glue the pinecones in two or three rings across your grapevine wreath. Be very generous with your hot glue to make sure all the pinecones are stable and will stay in place.

You can just randomly glue the pinecones on or if you want your wreath to be more symmetric you can arrange them by size. It looks nice if you arrange the larger ones in the center ring and the smaller ones on the outside of it,

Once all the pinecones are glued down let the wreath air-dry for a little while. If you want it to be natural, then you are done when it is dry. You can always add a bow, some holly, or berries to give it a more festive look.

If you want your wreath to be white, lay in on a protected surface and spray a few coats of paint until you have a nice bright finish. You can sprinkle glitter on the paint before it dries to add a nice sparkly touch to your holiday decorations.

You can also decorate a plain wreath with fake spray snow for a nice wintry look.

Make sure to use a heavy-duty hanger when hanging your wreath as it will be pretty heavy.
