Ann Siper
Need a privacy shade on a window in your home? This DIY privacy screen is a sleek lined Japanese inspired window screen perfect for any window in your home.

You can add a hinge to this Japanese window screen craft project to make it so that it opens easily any time you need to look out the window.

To Make Japanese Inspired Window Screen for Privacy You Will Need:

White Rice Paper

Wood Trim

Screws

Hinge

Staple Gun

Paint

Scissors

To get started you need to measure the inside of your window frame. Please note that this needs to be a wood window frame. If your frame is metal, then your screen will still work, but you can not drill the hinges in.

In place of the hinges make sure your privacy screen fits snugly in the frame and it can simply be pressed in.

Now, on to the Japanese style privacy screen frame. Cut your wood trim out to the correct size. You want to measure how wide the trim is. Cut two pieces ot the height of your frame. Subtract the width of these two pieces from the width of the frame, and cu t2 pieces of trim this size.

Now, I like to use a nice wood trim from the local Home Improvement store. Something about 2 inches wide and ½ inch thick is perfect.

Lay out your wood trim to form the box shape of your window. You can use flat L brackets to screw each of the four corners together. Pre drill the holes for the screws I you choose to go this route.

Another option is to use a staple gun. This is a light weight frame, so this will work. Use heavy staples an place two in each corner.

Now, paint out the wood trim frame in black. A nice dark espresso brown will also work.

Let this dry. Meanwhile cu tout your while rice paper to size. Trim perfect straight edges.

Lay the window frame face down on a flat surface. Lay the privacy rice paper on the back, ling it up perfectly.

Se the staple gun to adhere this to the back of the frame. Make sure the paper does not sage as you work.

Now, install the hinges into one side of the back of the frame, one 4 inches from the top and one four inches from the bottom. Pre drill the holes and screws that will not go through the wood trim.

Line the window screen up on the inside of your window frame. Mark the hinge holes and pre drill these. Screw into place!

You can also add a small knob on the front to help open the Japanese privacy screen with!
