Headboards are some of the most expensive pieces of virtually useless furniture in the home. While they look great they really serve very little purpose aside from keeping the mattress off the back wall of a room. So why spend thousands of dollars on a queen size headboard that is just for looks? You can make your own queen size headboard in just a few hours for under $50 and it can be made to coordinate with whatever you have in the bedroom. This DIY queen headboard is made out of an interior raised panel door which has been recycled into the perfect furniture piece!

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 1: Begin by determining the size of the headboard that you will need. This will be the size door that you need in height. For instance, if your queen bed measures 6.5 feet across then you will probably want a recycled raised panel interior door that is at least 7 feet in height.

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 2: If the door that you have is too tall, for instance if it happens to be 8 feet for a 6.5 foot bed then you have two options to fix this. The first option is to cut the door down to the size that you prefer. The second option is to use the entire door and all of its refurbished beauty to create a headboard that stands out past the sides of the bed. This is a nice decorative touch to some styles but it won't work for every room.

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 3: Paint the trim with white paint and also the entire door with white paint. You only need to paint one side of the door since it will be hung on the wall and only one side will be showing. Same goes for the decorative trim. The local home store will have a variety of decorative trim options to choose from that range in price from very inexpensive to more than $30 per stick. Most sticks of trim will be 10 feet long so one stick will be plenty for the project. If you like a decorative trim that is very elaborately designed then you may spend a bit more but it will definitely add a nice touch to the headboard.

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 4: Using the saw, cut a piece of trim that is equal to the height of the door. This will go along the top of the headboard which is actually the side of the door. Using the trim nailer or trim nails and a hammer attach the trim to the door. Lay the door so that the height of the door is horizontal and attach the trim to the top of this.

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 5: Using a colored paint, paint the panels that are raised on the door with a separate color. For an antique style bedroom an off white paired with the crisp white works well. For a child's bedroom a bold or bright color is perfect. The paint color for the panel section of the door should coordinate with your bedroom décor. To assure that you have straight lines to work with you can use masking tape or painters tape to tape of the panels before painting them.

DIY Headboard with Recycled Raised Panel Interior Door Step 6: To hang the door on the wall behind the bed, attach two hanging brackets to the backside of the door about 3 inches from the top. Picture type brackets will work for this. Then simply hang the recycled door headboard on the wall centered behind the bed!
