DIY Quick and Easy Curtains in Less Than 5 Minutes for Under $3

Stephanie Manning
Finding beautiful curtains to match your bed linens can cost a fortune. Finding the right material and making them yourself will save a few bucks but can take countless hours of cutting and sewing. Here is a quick and easy method for making beautiful curtains in less than 5 minutes that costs under $3. The best part is that it doesn't require any sewing.

The secret is using bed sheets as your fabric. Wal-Mart carries a wide variety of sheets that match any color scheme. They have various shades in blues, tans, whites, reds, greens, and black. During certain times of the year they carry additional colors to match their new ensembles. Since the twin size sheets range from $2-3 they will save you a ton on fabric expenses. The twin sheets are already stitched along all four sides and have a 3 inch lip on the top. This means you save time and money.

What you will need

1 Twin Size Bed Sheet (2 if you are covering double windows or a sliding glass door)

Scissors

Don't forget your curtain rod and screw driver.

How to Make Your Inexpensive Curtains:

Step 1

Take the curtain out of the package and layout it out strait. If it is wrinkled you may iron it or throw it in the dry with a damp cloth for 5-10 minutes.

Step 2

Once your curtain is laid out flat on your working surface, find the top. Once you have located the 3 inch rim on top of the curtain turn it around so that the raw stitching (the back) is facing you.

Step 3

Use your scissors to make 1 inch incision on each end of the rim. You will want to make your incision about 1 cm from each end. Make sure that you only cut through the first layer of fabric. Tip: Use the sharpest point of your scissors to poke a small hole in the fabric and then cut the 1 inch incision.

Step 4

Once you have made an incision on each end of the sheet. Slide the curtain rod in and hang. It's that simple.

Optional: If you need a shorter curtain or would like to create valance, simply move your incisions down 12-20 inches. Make the incisions at stated in step 3 just lower down. Once you insert your curtain rod flip the top of the fabric over the rod. This will create a shorter curtain. You can flip the fabric out for a nice, simple but elegant valance or flip it in if you choose not to have a valance.

I love this! I'm no sewing genius and I have 8 windows to get curtains done for! I got curtains from Walmart that were $9 each, and it had the valance and tiebacks too, but they are all one piece and I don't think I like that. I will be taking this advice! Thank you so much!

Yes, And believe it or not they look really good. The twin size sheet is long enough to cover 1 window and still have plenty to scrunch and give it the classic ripple look. I have my bedroom, 2 living room house done in them. A cheap set of curtains cost 10 bucks these days. These are really cheap and the colors are great. Plus washing them is a breeze! They are awesome!
