DIY Rave Girl Clothing

Eloah James
Rave clothing is a little like the 80s met The Jetsons at a roller disco and started a fashion line. Bright fluorescent "day-glo" colors offset with black on tube and tank tops, micro-minis, and shiny short shorts, all designed to try to stand out in the crowd while keeping the wearer as cool as possible on a packed dance floor. Here is a DIY rave girl outfit great to wear under a hoodie and over a bathing suit bottom or stretchy boy short, with knee socks and crazy heels.

Materials

Shirt
Black tank top with spaghetti straps, black edging ribbon, black thread, and a 4" x 12" rectangle of fabric in a fluorescent and/or glow-in-the-dark color.

Skirt
Black stretch fabric that is 6" x your waist measurement, straight pins and 8 yards of tulle or nylon netting (2 black, 2 each in 3 fluorescent colors, one matching the shirt panel).

Optional: Glow-in-the-dark, blacklight, and or fluorescent fabric paints in multiple colors, stencils

Shirt
Fold the ribbon over the edges of the colored rectangle and sew in place. Sew the corners of one short side to each of the straps, about 3-4 inches from the top of the tank. Sew the other end of the rectangle down to the bottom edge of the tank top.

Skirt
Lay the black fabric out in a line with the "back" side facing up. Gather one color of tulle and pin it to one side of the black fabric so that the ends of the tulle reach no more than halfway up the black material. Repeat this on the other side with a different color. Continue gathering and pinning until all tulle has been used. As necessary, adjust the tulle and re-pin it in order to cover the entire length of the black fabric. Fold the black fabric down over the tulle so that the edges of the black piece are aligned. Sew along the edge of the black to secure the tulle and create the waist band. Fold the black fabric the other direction so that the open ends meet. Sew the back seam approximately ½ inch from the edge of the fabric.

Finishing Touches
To further make this outfit your own, you can use paints with or without stencils to create geometric and freeform shapes on the solid black parts of your outfit. You may also want to write words and phrases like "rave on", "party", or any other popular references you choose.
