DIY Redecorating Your Home for Free
Rearranging Furniture and Reusing Accessories to Redecorate Your Home
What if you could remodel your home for free? I know that may sound like a dream, but I can show you step by step how to redecorate your home with no money simply by reusing what you already have to give it a new look.
First, take all of the accessories out of the room you want to redecorate. This will include pictures and paintings, small furniture such as end tables or ottomans, shelves, and accent pieces. You also want to remove curtains, throw pillows, lamps, and rugs.
Clean everything really well. Dust the blinds and window sills, get all of the cobwebs out of the corners. Clean ceiling fans and light fixtures. Clean the windows. Clean your walls and baseboards and then vacuum the floor.
Once everything is clean, open the blinds to get as much light as possible. Decide which furniture pieces you want to keep in the room and which pieces you can use in another room or get rid of. Walk around your room, sit in every chair and imagine how you want your new room to look.
With a blank canvas, you can really get a feel for other options for your room. Use an online tool such as Better Homes and Gardens Arrange a room feature. It is a free online tool. http://www.bhg.com/decorating/arrange-a-room/ Play around with various designs until you figure out exactly where you want your furniture to go.
Do not be afraid to set your furniture on an angle. If you have a long living room, your couch does not have to go up against the wall. Divide your room into two parts, an active part where the television and main seating area are and an inactive part where you put the two wing chairs from Aunt Edna with a book shelf between them to make a reading area.
Do you have any blank areas? Walk through the house or the garage and see what other furniture you can use. It doesn't have to be something conventional. For example, maybe you have an old piano bench but no piano to go with it. You can use that piano bench in an entry way, add a decorative basket underneath for shoes and then put a hanging coat rack above it on the wall for kid's school bags and coats. A foot locker can be turned on it's side to make a decorative table in the corner or even as a coffee table. Don't look at things as what they are used for, but what else they could be used for.
After you have placed all of your furniture, go through and place your accessories except for the lighting elements. You want to sav ethe lighting elements for last. Try not to put something in the same place as before. Remember the key is to get a new look.
If you are tired of your curtains, use that sheer material you bought for something else and never finished to add a swag or use the curtains from another room. The same idea goes for rugs, clocks, pictures or other accessories. That green ceramic utensil holder may not match your kitchen any more but it may make a great vase in the living room. Adding color is a great way to brighten a room.
Only after you have everything placed where you want it do you want to add your lighting. Since furniture and curtains can produce more darkness in a room, adding the lamps and lighting features last ensures you will have plenty of light. Just remember to have fun and be creative.
