DIY: Removing Rust from Cast Iron

Although cast iron cookware is thought to last a lifetime, in some circumstances, if subjected to moisture, rust can appear. When this happens instead of discarding the cookware, learn how to remove rust from cast iron which is easily achieved by carrying out an efficient cleaning process. It is worthwhile learning what to do as it will obviously be the more economical option to take and will ensure your cast iron cookware can be safely re-used.

Before embarking on this exercise, protective clothing such as rubber gloves and goggles need to be worn to prevent the cleaning products to come into contact with human skin and eyes. In the cases of minor surface rust, usually an oven cleaner is strong enough to remove this. This is done by spraying oven cleaner onto the rusted cast iron pan and sealing it in a large plastic bag for a period of up to two days. By dealing with it in this way, it ensures that the cleaning process is continuous. Upon removal from the bag, scrub the rusted area with a fine wire wheel on an electric drill. Finally rinse with a mild detergent and warm water. So by learning how to remove rust from cast iron, this will successfully deal with this problem.

However, should cast iron cookware be heavily encrusted in rust then another method needs to be carried out. Therefore, a combination of distilled vinegar and water is used and the pot is immersed in this liquid for a few hours. For safety reasons, it is best to do this outside your house or in the garage. This is because of the chemical reaction that will result giving an unpleasant odour and also any splashes could stain the surrounding area. Then remove and place in a combination of mild soap and water to enable all the acid to neutralize. Lastly, ensure the pan is well scrubbed and rinsed off thoroughly. This method is an efficient lesson in learning how to remove rust from cast iron.

Seasoning is then necessary to prevent any rust recurring and will provide a non-stick surface on cast iron cookware too. This is carried out by subjecting the cast iron pots to a mild heat and then applying a thin film of vegetable oil to the surface of the pot and placing in a warm oven for 30 minutes. Any surplus oil can be removed after this process has taken place.

There are other ways of dealing with rust but whatever methods you elect to use always ensure the pot is washed in a mild detergent after. Finally, always ensure that correct storage of cast iron pans is adhered to by keeping any moisture away. This is why it is essential to know how to remove rust from cast iron.
