DIY: Repair a Tear in a Leather Sofa

Amy Whittle
A tear in a leather sofa does not necessarily mean that the sofa is ruined forever. Careful repair work can conceal the tear and make your leather sofa functional once more. In order to complete this repair properly, you will need to purchase a leather repair kit in a color that matches your existing leather sofa.

Step 1: Clean the tear with rubbing alcohol and a clean rag. Use a scalpel or very sharp razor to trim any wear marks around the edges of the tear.

Step 2: Slide a piece of canvas that came with your leather repair kit into the tear and underneath the leather on your sofa. You may need a pair of tweezers to complete this step, depending on the size of the tear in your leather sofa.

Step 3: Apply glue with a small brush between the canvas and the underside of the leather near the tear. Be generous and try to coat as much of the canvas patch as possible. Press down to adhere the patch to the leather of the sofa.

Step 4: Apply the filler from the repair kit into the crack using a small brush. Allow the area to dry: you can diminish the drying time by using a hair dryer to heat the area.

Step 5: Continue applying thin layers of the filler using a brush until the crack is filled. Allow time to dry between each step. Smooth the last layer with a putty knife to ensure that it is completely smooth.

Step 6: Before the final coat of filler dries, press the grain pad into the filler. This will create a texture that will cause the fill to blend with the rest of the sofa.

Step 7: Apply the touch up paint to the fill using a sponge. Blend outwards so that the patch is not readily apparent.

Step 8: Allow the sofa to dry completely, then apply the clear sealant to the patched area. This sealant will prevent the paint from rubbing off the leather over time.
