DIY Retro Home Decor: 60s Living Room Paint Colors

Pam Gaulin
Living room paint colors inspired by the 60s are blends of the primary colors and secondary colors.

These retro color families fall in between a primary color and a secondary color. For example, these colors fall between red and orange (red plus yellow). OR they fall between yellows and greens (yellow plus blue).

This almost "layering" affect within each color family adds a depth the the color palette not seen in some other trendy home interior palettes.

The 60s living room paint colors is a vibrant color choice living room decor.

DIY Retro Home Decor: 60s Living Room Paint Colors: Red/Orange Family

These are not the fluorescent oranges and bright reds you might think of in "mod" designs. These retro paint colors from the 60s are more muted and subtle, but still bold in their own right.

Pick hues that are fall on the color wheel between the red family and orange family.

Peppery by Sherwin-Williams is the inside of partially-cooked red pepper. Slightly spicy and very tasty.

Hot Spice by Benjamin Moore is a slightly lighter and brighter color than Peppery by Sherwin-Williams. Pick one of these two for the 60s palette, since they are quite similar.

Orange Rust by Pantone is also similar, but with a bit more orange in the mix.

Big Top by Dutch Boy also fits in this color family, but is not as spicy as the other colors.

These colors are a mix of yellows and greens, which gives the colors a strong yellow undertone.

Antiquity by Sherwin-Williams is a very pleasing and workable yellow green.

Limelight by Benjamin Moore is a lighter color the Sherwin-Williams Antiquity, and it's a bit brighter.

Complement those family colors with a muted mid-tone blue.

Drizzle by Sherwin-Williams adds a light touch.

Citadel by Benjamin Moore is a grayed, serious blue to help tone down the other colors.

Or consider Storm Cloud by Sherwin-Williams.

Aptly named Aqua Haze by Benjamin Moore suits the 60s style living room.

DIY Retro Home Decor: 60s Living Room Paint Colors: Pink-Purple

Just a hint of pink with the tiniest bit of purple will complete the 60s living room decor.

Yummy Strawberry Sorbet by Benjamin Moore works well.

Orchid by Sherwin-Williams is one other option.

Be sure to add your favorite deep black as an accent color to complete the 60s living room retro decor.
