DIY Retro Kitchen Hardware Made from Vintage Necklaces

This idea for retro kitchen hardware is the perfect way to update (or back date) kitchen cabinet hardware in your retro kitchen on a super small budget. Investing in retro kitchen hardware can be extremely costly and put a strain on a kitchen remodel budget.

You can use some of that old vintage costume jeweler you have collected over time to create some fun and whimsical retro kitchen drawer pulls that make a fun a colorful statement! Be sure to mix and match your retro kitchen hardware for an eclectic retro kitchen look!

To Make Vintage Kitchen Hardware You will need:

Vintage costume jewelry necklaces
Retro necklaces
Retro beads
Floral wire
Scissors or wire snips

I always come across boxes of retro costume jewelry at local flea markets and yard sales. You can buy these fun old pieces by the box or even by the piece. Look for round beaded necklaces. Basically you are looking for good sized beads your hands can easily hold onto.

If you are having no luck finding good sized costume jewelry then try using large plastic beads. Wood beads in bright retro colors will work well also.

Now, measure how far apart the existing holes are on your kitchen cabinets.

You want to cut out pieces of floral wire that are three times this long.

Use a nice sturdy floral wire or any type of strong wire from your local home improvement story that you would like.

Now, go ahead and cut the string that holds the vintage costume jewelry together. Let the beads slide off into a piece of Tupperware or a bowl.

Now, restring the beads on your floral wire. It really looks awesome to start with small beads, work on large bread, and then end with smaller beads again.

You want to make the beaded section of retro kitchen drawer pulls about two to three inches wider than the holes are places on the kitchen cabinet. This will allow the retro kitchen handle to stick out for easy grip.

Now, slip one side of the floral wire through each hole.

Tie the loose ends together in the back of the kitchen cabinet door to attach your retro kitchen hardware.

Continue until all of your kitchen cabinets have new vintage hardware!

Tip: If you can not find costume jewelry in the colors you want try spray painting them out in a cherry red or retro blue color.

Be sure to spray on a primer first, then the paint. Finally, finish off the retro kitchen hardware with a few coats of a clear acrylic spray paint to help them last as long as possible!
