DIY Rose Wedding Bouquet: Classic and Unconventional Methods

Besides calla lilies, roses are the most common flowers used in wedding bouquets these days. This is because they are classic symbols of love, and they come in a wide variety of colors and sizes to match just about any wedding color scheme. However, your rose bridal and bridesmaids' bouquets do not need to be conventional, but instead, you can incorporate new and creative ideas into your wedding bouquets to make them unique.

DIY Rose Bouquet: Pick The Roses

When you are starting to think about your rose wedding bouquet, the first thing you will need to do is to pick the specific roses you will be using. The elements to consider here are the color, size, and quantity. Generally, a bridal bouquet should have at least 10 large blooms, possibly more if there are not going to be many other flowers in the bouquet. Likewise, bridesmaids' bouquets need at least 6 blooms.

If your wedding colors are hard to find in traditional large roses, consider getting red or white large roses and accenting them with colored mini roses, or spray roses. These smaller blooms will bring some color into the bouquet without being overwhelming.

DIY Rose Bouquet: Pick Accent Flowers and Greenery

There are many other flowers and greenery that look excellent when paired with roses in wedding bouquets. For example, lilies, including the popular stargazer lily, look great next to roses. In addition, small elegant flowers such as orchids will add an interesting touch to your bouquet. You will also want to pick some greenery, such as ferns, ruscus, and anything else that matches your color scheme and fits your idea of what kind of bouquet you want.

DIY Rose Bouquet: Classic Bouquet

Your classic rose bouquet can be assembled very easily at home by arranging flowers in a vase with a relatively narrow mouth. Pay attention to balancing the arrangement so it does not need to be held in one particular orientation by watching the colors and sizes of flowers. Greenery should be mostly around the outer edges of the bouquet, although you will want to have a little of it poking up the middle as well.

When you have the bouquet how you want it, you will need to have somebody grasp the stems tightly and pull it out of the vase, while somebody else secures the stems together with floral tape. Then you can wrap ribbon around the stems to cover the floral tape and make it pretty, securing it with pins or tying it off in a bow.

DIY Rose Bouquet: Unconventional Bouquet

If you would prefer a more unconventional bouquet, there are a number of ways you could do this. One idea is to make a bouquet that you will cradle in your arm instead of carrying with your hands, which works especially well if you have just a few long-stemmed roses.

Another unconventional bouquet is one that mixes very commonplace flowers like daisies with your roses. This will make the roses stand out more in contrast to the other flowers. Hydrangeas are also good flowers to use in an unconventional bouquet in which you have a ball of hydrangeas with roses of a variety of colors poking out from between them.

If you have another idea for your bouquet, go with it. It's your wedding, and you can decide exactly what you want your flowers to look like!
