DIY: Tightening and Sealing a Bathtub Drain

Amy Whittle
If your bathtub drain is slightly loose, or leaking where it meets the tub, it's time to do some basic maintenance. Fixing these problems are fairly straightforward, so there shouldn't be any need to call a plumber. Before beginning, however, make sure that the drain is in good physical condition. Any dents or dings and you should consider buying a replacement while you fix any problems.

If you have a lever stopper bathtub drain, you will need to remove the top lever assembly as well. Remove the screws on either side of the lever and put them in a safe place. Then you should be able to pull out the entire assembly. Of course, if the brass plunger does not come out on the end of the chain, you'll have to use a flexible retrieval tool to get it back.

Then, once you've fixed the bathtub drain, you can replace the entire lever assembly after the drain is back in place. If you've had trouble with the brass plunger, pinch the hook closed using needle nosed pliers. This will prevent it from falling into the drain again.

Step 1: Using a pair of pliers, grip the inside of the basket of the bathtub drain.

Step 2: Turn the drain counterclockwise, twisting it until it is free of the drain.

TIP: Some drains don't twist, but instead pull straight up. If twisting doesn't help you dislodge the drain from the tub, try pulling up firmly.

Step 3: Clean the threads of the pipe and drain carefully with an old toothbrush to remove any grime. A paste of baking soda can be used if necessary to remove any stuck on dirt.

Step 4: Apply a bead of plumber's putty on the threads of the pipe. This will prevent any water leaks.

Step 5: Twist the bathtub drain into place using your hands.

Step 6: Give the tub drain a few firm twists with the pliers to make sure that the drain is nice and tight. Don't over tighten: it could damage the tub.
