DIY: Tips for Removing Roof Rust Stains

Amy Whittle
Roof rust stains are not only unsightly, but are a sign that your roof is slowly degrading over time. The moment you spot some stains, schedule roof maintenance for the next sunny, clear day. This will allow you to address any problems before they become actual leaks on the roof. Keep in mind, however, that it may not be the roof at all that's causing the rust. Any metal item on the roof could be rusting and causing the stain.

Step 1: Get ready to work on your roof. Be sure that you're wearing sneakers that will grip the roofing well.

Step 2: Make sure the roof is in good condition. Any loose or broken shingles must be removed and replaced before any other cleaning is required.

Step 3: Create a cleaner suitable for removing roof stains by mixing trisodium phosphate with water. Check the instructions for the highest concentrate allowable for asphalt shingles. Test the mixture on a piece of scrap or on an area of the roof that is not readily noticeable to make sure it will not lift the color from the shingles or bleach them in any way.

Step 4: Apply the TSP solution with a scrub brush while wearing rubber gloves and eye protection. Scrub hard enough to remove any rust stains, but not so hard that you damage the shingles.

Step 5: Use sandpaper to remove the rust from the actual rusting object. Assess the metal object: old antennas and other useless items should be removed. Sometimes metal clips are used to secure wires to the roof: you may want to replace them with sturdy plastic clips. If you decide not to remove the object, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Seal the rusting object that is causing the roof stains. Use clear sealant or paint depending on your aesthetic preferences. Plan on applying a rust inhibiting primer if you paint, as well as a couple of coats of paint to prevent further rust. Sealant users should plan on applying two coats, allowing for drying time between each coat.
