DIY Tutorial: How to Edit Voice Memos on Your iPod

Adrianna Henry
When using the voice memo feature on your iPod, there are times you may want to edit what you have recorded. For instance, if you are using the memo in a class lecture, you will want to edit out the long pauses. if you are leaving a detailed voice memo to yourself, during playback you may want to clear some of the information out. Also, when you start or stop your voice memo on your iPod, on playback, you can hear the annoying clicking or background noise from you searching through the buttons. You can edit that nonsense out as well. I have found these steps helpful when I want to edit memo's on my iPod.

Things you will need: iPod, a .wav or mp3 editing (software), or Quick Time Pro.

First, you need to plug your iPod into your computer, and open up Quick Time Pro or your editing software.

You then export your voice memo file to the software. Once you do that, the file will convert, and you can save it to your computer. To do this, open up the file in your editing software, and you can now edit the file whichever way you'd like to. You select File Open from your editing software and then locate the memo you would like to edit.

You can also just plug your iPod to your computer and sync it up if you have the auto-sync feature on. That will bring your memos over to iTunes. Then, you'd open up the file and use your editing software to remove what you don't want out of the voice memo. Each editing software will have different options to select from. The most common that I have found is "trim to selection." Once you have finished removing what you don't want, you select trim to selection and it will cut the memo down to your selections. There are several free pieces of editing software out on the web right now. I prefer to use Quick Time Pro, even though you have to pay for it. It is just simple to use, and I know I have a good product. I'm sure some of the other titles out there will do the job just fine. Just make sure to look for "mp3 or wav editing software" and you will not have any problems. Before paying for software, check around for some decent free titles. If you have an Apple pc or laptop, more than likely there is free software on Apple's web site that you can take advantage of. I would first check there. Also for Windows users, sometimes there are free software titles on the web site as well.
