DIY Wedding: Calla Lily Centerpiece Ideas

Kristen May
Calla lilies are very traditional and elegant flowers for weddings, and they come in a variety of colors to achieve whatever look you desire. From classic large white calla lilies to the miniature colored varieties, calla lilies can be artfully arranged in many different types of centerpieces for your wedding reception.

Classic Calla Lily Centerpiece

A really simple calla lily centerpiece can be made out of a single flower, or if you prefer, two or three of them. The only materials you will need are basic white calla lilies (1-3 for each centerpiece), vases with slender necks, and some ribbon. The vases and ribbon can be whatever color you would like, but I recommend clear vases and a see-through shimmer ribbon in your wedding color scheme.

To put together each of these classic centerpieces, you will first need trim the stems of your calla lilies a little bit at a 45ยบ angle so they will take in more water and last longer. Then, for each centerpiece, tie a length of ribbon around the stem of the lily (or lilies) just below the bloom. Leave the ends of the ribbon long so they hang out of the vase, all the way down to the table if you would like. Trim the ends of the ribbon at an angle to make it a little fancier.

Colored Mini Calla Lily Centerpieces

If your wedding color scheme goes well with one of the varieties of mini calla lilies, you can make beautiful centerpieces with these flowers that will add some color to your tables. For materials, you will just need vases, a few colored calla lilies for each centerpiece, plus some large white lilies if you desire.

One simple option is to trim the stems and arrange the lilies in a slender-neck vase as described above. Put in the white lilies first, and then distribute the colored miniature calla lilies around them. You can tie ribbon around the stems if you would like, but it is not necessary because of the color and interest that the small lilies add.

If you would like something more fun and informal, consider purchasing wider vases and filling them with water plus something interesting that will go with the color of your lilies. Lemons are a good option, or you can use small stones, or even some live fish. Then carefully arrange the calla lilies in the vase around these items.

Re-Use Your Bouquets as Centerpieces

One final tip for your calla lily centerpieces will save you a lot of time and money, especially if you have a large wedding party. However, it will only work if your wedding bouquets have calla lilies in them. The concept is simple: just have an empty vase available for each bridesmaid bouquet, and after the ceremony, just put the bouquets in the vases. They will be beautiful and artfully arranged centerpieces, and they save you a lot of work and supplies in making additional centerpieces.
