DIY Wedding: How to Make Floral Pew Decorations

Kristen May
Pew decorations are a small investment that can make a big difference in adding beauty to a wedding ceremony. In both indoor and outdoor wedding ceremony locations, it is easy to make arrangements of fresh flowers and greens that match the wedding theme and color and will be enjoyed by the guests. Best of all, you can have pew decorations on anywhere form one chair on each side of the aisle to having them on every row, so this idea can be adapted to whatever your wedding budget may be.

How to Select Flowers for Wedding Pew Decorations

The flowers for your pew decorations should match the overall color scheme and floral scheme for your wedding. Even if you are buying bouquets from a florist, you can still make your own pew decorations using a similar set of flowers. One main question is whether to make a larger arrangement of different types of flowers, or to just use one flower that can stand alone.

For pew decorations with more than one stem of flowers, consider using a small handful of fresh white daisies. Another good option is a small bouquet of roses, or a few hydrangeas. If you would prefer something more colorful and informal, try gathering a variety of wildflowers or garden flowers that fit into your color scheme.

If you would prefer single flower pew decorations, make sure that your flower is large enough or elegant enough to stand on its own. Lilies such as stargazer lilies or other large colored lilies can be perfect in pew decorations, as they are large and fragrant. If you are looking for something classic, you could use a single red rose, or a single white calla lily.

How to Select Accessories for Wedding Pew Decorations

In addition to flowers, you should consider putting greenery in your pew decorations for your wedding. Some light ferns would make a good backdrop, or a sprig or two of baby's breath. Often, you can incorporate garden greens such as hosta into your pew decoration as well.

You will also want some ribbon to help hold things together and to trail down the edges of the pews. Select a wide ribbon, or a lot of thin ribbon, that matches your wedding's color scheme. Satin or see-through ribbons are both fancy options that will go well with a wedding.

Tools Needed to Make Wedding Pew Decorations

You will also need a pair of scissors, some vases to keep the flowers in until the decorations are mounted, and a roll of florist tape. In addition, you need something with which to affix your arrangements to the pews or chairs. If your wedding site has pews, there are a number of hooks available in craft stores that clip onto the edge of the pew. If you have folding chairs, ask if you are allowed to use tape on them, which is the easiest way to attach your pew decorations.

Assembling Wedding Pew Decorations

There are a number of ways to assemble your pew decorations. If they are simple, with just a flower or two, some greenery, and some ribbons, you can just hold it all together with florist tape. If you are making more elaborate arrangements, you may want to look into other ways to hold them, such as cones or bouquet holders.

Arrange your flowers, greens, and ribbons with an eye to detail and balance. Remember that they will be viewed from the top and sides, but probably not the back that is fixed onto the pew or chair. Try to keep your pew decorations as uniform as possible to keep everything consistent as people walk down the aisle. Most of all, make sure to follow the bride's instructions regarding what she wants her pew decorations to look like, given that it is her wedding!
