Types of Calla Lilies
The most typical calla lily is the traditional large white bloom, which has an elegant trumpet-shaped white flower on a long stem. Large calla lilies also come in a couple other varieties, including the Diva Maria, which is just like the traditional white bloom, but with light pink shadings along the edge of the outside of the flower, making it perfect for weddings with that color scheme.
For other colors of calla lilies, consider getting some mini calla lilies. They come in a wide variety of colors, from deep purple (almost black) all the way to hot pink, orange, and the traditional white. If you would like to include your wedding's color scheme in your calla lily bouquets, you can either opt for a mini calla lily bouquet in that color, or you can make a traditional white calla lily bouquet with a few colored mini calla lilies as accents.
Purchasing Calla Lilies for Your Wedding Bouquet
To make a calla lily wedding bouquet on your own, you will obviously need some calla lilies. They can be purchased at any florist, although if you need more than a few, you will want to check beforehand to see if you need to put in an order. If you are purchasing a large number of calla lilies, one option is to buy wholesale, which can be done online. For example, you can get 30 large white calla lilies from Pacific Callas for just $135, or 60 for $195.
Other Supplies for Your Calla Lily Wedding Bouquet
The other supplies you will need to put together your calla lily wedding bouquets are scissors, florist tape, ribbon, and maybe some pins. The florist tape is not necessary, but will significantly aid in holding your bouquet firmly together, and it can be covered by ribbon. Your ribbon can be any color and type you want, and any width as well. If you would like to ribbon a wider section of your stem, consider wrapping it around multiple times. If you are going to tie off your ribbon, you won't need any pins, but otherwise, they will hold down the ends of your ribbon.
Calla lily bouquets look great without any other flowers or greens, but of course, if you would like other items in your bouquet, you will need those. Darker green leaves tend to look better with white calla lilies to create contrast, but any greens you want can be used. Calla lilies also look great when paired with the other traditional elegant wedding flower: roses!
Making Your Calla Lily Bouquet
Once you have all of your materials, it is time for you to put together your bouquets. There are a variety of styles of bouquets, and it is your choice as to which style you would like to make. One option is to leave the stems long and just arrange a few of them, secure with floral tape, and tie a ribbon around them, finishing in a bow. This bouquet can be cradled in the bride's arm, as the stems look a little too long when held upright.
If you are including other flowers in your calla lily bouquet, you will probably need to trim the stems, as the smaller flowers typically come with shorter stems. You will want to first arrange your large calla lilies, as these are the focal points of the bouquets, and then add in the smaller lilies or other fillers, taking care to distribute them throughout the bouquet. When the arrangement is complete, bind the stems with your florist tape and trim the ends of the stems so they are even. Then use ribbon to cover as much of the stems as you would like.
However you make your calla lily bridal bouquet, it is sure to be beautiful and elegant, and something the bride can be proud to hold as she walks down the aisle.
