The health benefits of omega-3 fish oil are well documented and many people take a supplement to improve their health. a few of these benefits are: helping to prevent cancer; increased energy level; anti inflammatory; improves sleep; and helps prevent cardiovascular disease. There are some rare side effects however, that people taking the supplement need to know about so they can take precautions.

Dizziness

Omega-3 supplements are know to lower blood pressure and blood sugar. Both of these effects are ordinarily a good thing. But if you have low blood pressure or you take medication to lower your blood pressure Omega 3 supplements may lower it even more causing it to be too low. If your blood pressure gets to low you will feel dizzy. If you have low blood sugar or are a diabetic and take medication to lower your blood sugar Omega 3 supplements may lower your blood sugar even more causing it to go too low. If blood sugar goes to low you will feel dizzy and begin to shake. If you suffer from blood pressure or blood sugar problems talk to your doctor before starting Omega 3 supplements.

Allergic Reaction

If you have a fish allergy you may have an allergic reaction to the omega-3 fish oil supplement. If you get a rash or become itchy after starting a regimen of fish oil you may be having an allergic reaction to the fish oil.

Vitamin Poisoning and Toxicity

Cod liver oil contains large amounts of vitamin A and D. Too much of these vitamins is bad for you and could lead to toxicity in your body. Omega-3 does not have any vitamins and therefore does not cause this problem. It is only the liver fish oil that causes this particular side effect. So be careful what you buy, Make sure you are buying Omega 3 when buying fish oil.

Thin Blood

Fish oil is a blood thinner, so if you are taking any type of blood thinner already you may end up thinning your blood too much. Remember aspirin is a blood thinner and although not a prescription drug in combination with fish oil may thin your blood too much.

Blood Clotting Problems

Since fish oil thins your blood, you may have trouble getting your blood to clot, especially if you are already a free bleeder.

Immune System

Researchers have found that Omega-3 can have a negative effect on the immune system. If a persons immune system is already weakened for some reason taking large doses of Omega 3 may further compromise the immune system by causing it to react to infections slower than normal. This gives bacteria a better chance to grow, leading to infections that might ordinarily have been fought off by the immune system.
