D.J. Dozier - His New York Mets Career 1992

D.J. Dozier was the Mets version of Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, meaning he was an NFL player who also took a shot at playing baseball. Unfortunately for the Mets Dozier was neither Bo Jackson nor Deion Sanders. Dozier played four seasons in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings (1987-1990) and one season for the Detroit Lions (1991) serving mainly as a backup running back. In 1990 the Mets signed him as an amateur free agent. After spending two seasons in their minor league system he made his Met debut on May 6, 1992. After struggling in his first ten games with the Mets, he hit just .200; Dozier was shipped back to the minors. He returned to the Mets as a September call up but continued to struggle and finished the season with a .191 average and 2 RBIs in 47 at bats. Following the season he was traded to the San Diego Padres along with Wally Whitehurst and Raul Casanova in exhange for Tony Fernandez. 1992 would be his only season in the majors.
