Thought the DMVs at different locations have varied tests, the basics are always the same. Once a pattern is charted, it is easy to pass the tests. Every test is made up of two parts.
1. The written test
2. The Driving test
While nothing can beat hard work, I have noticed that it is actually how smart your work is that gets you through. I have known people who have memorized the entire DMV booklet fail the first set of questions whereas people who have just used their common sense have sailed through. Below are some simple tricks that should get you through the test easily.
Written:
1. Read.
There is ample material available on the DMV sites including sample tests. I have provided the link below for Va. Similar material and tests will be available for the other states.
Ex. Sample tests
Reading Material
Go through the material and take the sample tests.
2. Learn to interpret signs.
Decoding the road signs is the most important part of the tests. Look out on the road and learn to interpret the signs.
3. Play the driver.
Imagine yourself in the driver's seat and come up with suitable responses under any given situation.
Once you have cleared the written test you get a learners permit. The DMV expects you to learn driving and come back for drivers test after a month. Using a learner's permit you may drive a vehicle with a person with a permanent license beside you.
Driving:
1. Never forget the basics.
Almost 6 out of 10 people who appear for the driver's test tend to forget the basic rules of driving.
• Never ever forget the seatbelt.
• Do not forget put the correct indicator on while turning.
• Interpret the "Yield" sign correctly.
2. Do not be over smart.
The DMV assessor usually put safety first. If he asks you to do a particular thing and you know you can do it better, don't. Always follow what the assessor wants you to do. Do not be over smart and contradict him in his views.
3. Speed Limit.
Never ever cross the speed limit. It is ok to drive below it but as soon as you cross the limit, consider yourself failed.
4. Learn parallel parking.
Though not a necessity, most states insist on parallel parking and it's always better to be prepared.
Follow the simple tips and assuredly you will come back with a license in your hand.
