Do What You Can

Abby Greenhill
I took a walk around the block today
And came back home a different way
I saw some things I hadn't seen before
When I looked in someone's open door

The house was dirty and all I could see
Where little faces staring back at me
They were dressed in rags and looked so poor
I couldn't just stand there anymore

I called them outside and was surprised to see
That they were very happy to see me
I gave them some candy I had in my purse
I had to do more before it got worse

I took some money from my hidden pocket
They saw what I had and jumped high like a rocket
I told them to ask their mom for permission
And I would buy some food for their kitchen

They looked at each other and tears fell fast
When they settled down they told me at last
Their mommy had died that very morning
She left them behind without any warning

Their daddy was at work and he didn't know
That God took his wife though she didn't want to go
Her place is in heaven and with God she'll now live
She gave them her all; she had nothing left to give

Now their daddy will love them and they will be fine
It will take lots of love and will be better in time
He is a good man and he will miss his wife
But with his kids' and God's love they will make a new life

There are people all around that need some help fast
They don't have jobs or money like they did in the past
Volunteer your time and do whatever you can
We each need to help out our fellow man
