Do Your Actions Fit Your Goals?

Kori Rodley Irons
We work hard, we set goals, we try to seek out purpose and productivity for our lives. Sometimes, things just are not meshing, however. It may be that we feel a nagging sense of "something's missing" or perhaps there is a discontent in what it is we are doing. If we let things get too far out of whack, we might even feel burnt out and depressed. One way to see if things are in line is to ask yourself if the actions you are doing actually fit with the goals you have set for yourself or the dreams you are holding on to.

Why spend every day striving to make money or working a job you hate if your goals are very different? Maybe your goals are to become self-employed and move to the country to raise goats-how is working hard every day at the "day job" going to help you reach your goals? If you cannot see a logical and direct correlation, it might be time to rethink how you are spending your days.

Identify what really matters to you and what your goals actually are, and then strive to make sure your actions are compatible. Strangely enough, we all get so much conflicting information about how to achieve our dreams, do what's right and just generally live in this world that we can get confused. Perhaps we go to our job because we are responding to an ancient parental "voice" or we work at something because a teacher told us we were good at it-but, it is NOT getting us any closer to what we actually want to achieve in the world or moving us into the realm of our dreams and goals. This is not to say that every moment of every day will be fun and easy, but it is easier to work hard if we know we are working toward something we really want to happen.

Ask yourself if your activities and actions are moving you in the direction you want to go-do they match your values? Are your actions on friendly terms with your personal goals?
