Do I Have an Addiction to Social Networking?

Pat Bartels
I'm beginning to wonder if my behavior toward the computer and social networking would be considered a psychological problem, in other words, an addiction. I have two computers that are considered mine and within my household there are at least three more computers. I take a computer almost everywhere I go. Well, not grocery shopping.

If I travel, I take a computer with me. This is something that has been going on for a very long time. I cannot be separated from my computer or my fans or my followers for long periods of time. It just can't happen. This wouldn't be prudent. I would begin having computer withdrawal. My temper would flare and I would feel anxious.

I belong to Facebook and Twitter. I don't spend as much time now on Facebook as I used to. Not since I've found Associated Content, eHow, and Factoidz. Now I spend a lot of time pounding the keyboard as I work furiously to produce content to submit to these sites. I hope that because of Associated Content, etc., that I am doing something constructive. I love it. What can I say?

I think I'd be more worried if I sat around playing games all the time. I have been known to do that on occasion but I believe I have kicked my habit of game playing. You can only do the same thing over and over for so long.

I even forget to eat sometimes. That can't be good. I love food. Well maybe it can be good. Now if only I could get in the habit of exercising maybe I would lose some weight. I've been trying to figure out a way to hook my computer up to my treadmill. Haven't quite figured out how to type and walk at the same time.

Don't even get me talking about email. It's imperative that I check my email every few minutes. If I'm away from my computer, I need to make sure my email program is shut down so my email goes to my phone. I would feel so out of touch if I didn't know what was going on. I do not, however, respond to email on my phone. I feel that's a redeeming quality. I only occasionally send text messages from my phone.

I leave my laptop on at all times in case a family member wants to Skype me. By the way, if you've got any new technologies that I can try, let me know.

Please help me to control my anxiety by commenting as frequently as possible on my articles. This sends me an email and gives me something to look at. I appreciate it more than I can say. Oh, I almost forgot, Tweet Me. If I can help you with your computer addiction, please let me know. I'd be happy to help out.

I don't think I'm really addicted to social networking. I can give it up any time I want.

I know what you mean. I'm addicted to Farmtown over at Facebook. Even when I turn my computer off and tell myself I won't get on it, I end up turning it back on to see if my plants are ready to harvest. lol

"Hi, my name is Tracie, and I am addicted to my computer." Maybe we can begin an online therapy session. :)

It truly is like an addiction! Fun read :)

Yes, I know the feeling. I'm not on Tweeter and only rarely visit Facebook, but I'm hooked on producing online content. :-)

I am hooked on Twitter but mostly to market my articles. I used to stay in chat rooms a lot but at least this makes me money.

Yes, you are, but nobody has created a self-help group for you yet ;) (by the way I'm addicted to my computer too - take it with me everywhere).

MMM, you might be addicted. I enjoy my new friends at AC and I just started to tweet, but still working part-time so I don't always get to the computer as much as I would like to. Great article

I hope things will be back to normal now - at the beginning of this week, I thought I lost a filling - and it kept making my head foggy - turns out I broke a tooth - found out 'cause I went to the dentist yesterday and got it fixed. Now am starting to feel back to normal.

Oh boy - we are so much alike. Do you go in the room with your computer for something else, and then 3 hours later realize you sat down at the computer and never did the other thing? Do you eat at the computer? Does your husband leave for work and come home before you've moved? Join the club!
