Do Angels Really Exist?

Using History and the Bible

Renee Bagley
What is an angel? An angel is a heavenly spirit believed to be a messenger, or intermediary, between God, or the gods, and humankind. Do angels exist? Yes. According to both the Bible and The History Channel, angels have existed for some time.

Ancient Greek religion believed that divine messengers were sent to humans to command, instruct, or inform them. They also believed that an angel could function in ways like being a protective angel, as a cosmic power, or a heavenly warrior.

I didn't know until I was involved in the research of angels that there is such a thing as a bad angel, also known as a demon. It is known that angels were described as "personified power mediating between divine and the human."

Ancient Israel was full of people devoted to the worship of one God, also known as monotheism, and they were able to "embrace the image of a council of gods by turning all but one into angels who serve one God". This was an accepted belief that made the knowledge on angels relatively easy. Though angels are said to not actually be a body, but a spirit, angels often are said to use another human as a vessel to do the act that they were sent for . Angels are said to be messengers and this makes perfect sense in factoring in that an angel is a spirit, which gives reasoning why the human is needed to deliver the message or reason through them.

A quote from the History channel states, "Although belief in angels is amply attested in the Bible, many theologians nevertheless suggest that the concept was adopted by biblical writers both as a literary device to personify the divine presence and as a means of demoting the gods of polytheistic religions."

In doing this research I came across a website that fully discusses angels in full detail and I was intrigued by the information. According to the web site ChristianAnswers.Net, who answers the question do angels become angels after death? The site claims that "Matthew 22:30 explains that they do not marry or reproduce like humans, and Hebrews (12:22-23) says that when we get to the heavenly Jerusalem, we will be met by myriads of angels and the spirits of righteous men made perfect" - two separate groups.

In Luke 20:34-36 it is said that "angels are a company or association, not a race descended from a common ancestor". There is an entire range of spirits that God has created, both good and evil angels, and those in special categories like cherubim, seraphim, and the archangel.

ChristianAnswers.Net also states that angels are mentioned at least 108 times in the Old Testament and 165 times in the New Testament.

The scripture tells us about the creation of angels, so we know that they have not existed from all eternity. This can be found in The Bible, in Nehemiah 9:6; Psalm 148:2,5.

Though the time of creation is never specifically told it is likely that it happened in Genesis 1:1. They claim that after the creation of the heavens and before he created the earth, that this is when angel creation could have occurred. It is also discusses that no new angels are being created, as angels are not subject to death; therefore they do not decrease in number.

The Bible states that angels can only be in one place at a time, as they have a localized presence. Angels are said to be either a dazzling white and blazing glory, but they can also take on the appearance of men when the occasion calls for it. Angels are a spirit, and they do know have to visible. It was Jesus who declared that "a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have", this was in Luke 24:37-39. An angel can also appear as a man with unusual features. Daniel saw an angel with arms and legs resembling polished metal and precious stones, and a face like lightning (in Daniel 10:5-6).

This gives us plenty of information to allow us to build a foundation for our knowledge of angelic beings. There is so much more available on this topic and I highly advise that you use the resource links to follow this topic even more closely. And now we know angels do in fact exist.
