Do Animals Talk? Well Sometimes They Try

The Story of Bam Bam and His "Fussing" Episode

Malina Debrie
Do pets talk? Sometimes it appears they do. Bam is a gorgeous, jet black, curly haired Cocker Spaniel. He was the subject of one of my articles for National Dog Day a few years ago. You can read about it here. Bam is owned by my oldest sister and her husband. He has become one of the family and he is simply adorable. To see some of the things Bam does only makes you fall deeper in love with him and makes you care whether he is taken good care of or not.

My sister calls me almost everyday right now because my entire family was worried about my illness. I think I had everyone fearful that I was going to soon see my mother. But as we all know, until the Lord decides it's your time, you have to stay here and suffer through the bad as well as enjoy the good.

Recently she called and after asking how I was doing and getting through that, she decided to tell me about an incident she just could not stop laughing about.

Bam is one of those dogs that will pretend that he has to go outside to take care of business all day long. When he is let out, he plays, watches the cars go by, in other words, he does everything but his business. Each time he ask to go out, my sister, brother-in-law or one of the children will let him outside, wait a few minutes for him to return to the door and then let him back in. They often call Bam a 'Lie" because he does not need to go out, he just pretends that he has to. So they say he lies to get outside. Sometimes Bam has to explore his surroundings before doing his business if he does his business.

This particular day, my brother-in-law let him out to take care of his business and forgot to let him back in. It was one of those unusually cold days in Pensacola when the temperature was in the low twenties and the wind chill dropped it another four to five degrees. So, the temperature was somewhere around 18 degrees. Bam was outside for almost twenty minutes in the cold.

The reason we know it was only about twenty minutes was the time my brother-in-law began to watch a show compared to the time when my sister returned from an appointment, found Bam outside and let him in. When my sister returned, she noticed Bam run to the vehicle and immediately run towards the door to let her know he wanted 'inside.'

She opened the door and stated that Bam flew in the house, ran to find my brother-in-law and began to, as my sister expressed, "Chew Him Out." She said Bam stood in front of him barking as if he was letting him know he did not appreciate staying outside in the cold for that period of time and to emphasize the fact that he was not going to be very pleased if he did it again.

My sister estimated that Bam 'fussed' for well over five minutes in his attempt to make sure my brother-in-law understood his anger. Bam then walked off grumpily, went to his doggie bed, placed himself down comfortably, closed his eyes and within minutes, he was asleep.

I reflect on this with my sister often. As I have expressed in other articles regarding my sister and brother pets, Bam (the dog) and Misty (the cat) have become cherished members of the family. Whenever I call or talk with my siblings, I always ask about Misty and Bam.

They might not talk like we do, but I had a toy poodle that would go and get his leash and hold it standing by the door, when he wanted to go walking.

Good for Bam to stand up for his rights. This was funny. Not that it happened, but how Bam reacted.

Excellent article, love it! Bam reminds me of my dog and some dogs I have had in the past as well. I hope you're doing well. ... I still must leave comments as a guest and fill out captchas every time, even though I am logged in! I have contacted AC/Yahoo about this and gotten no response. Frustrating. : /

That is funny. My dog cusses us out when we are leaving sometimes, after we walk out the door she will bark at us sometimes.

Bend low, get an ear near a dog's mouth, and you can convince small children that he is telling you all that they have done wrong throughout the day.

Wonderful article. I am sure that your brother-in-law has learned his lesson. ;)
