Do Babies Go to Heaven?

What Happens to Babies After They Die? Do They Go to Heaven?

Jack Wellman
What is the fate of those precious ones, so little and so young, as to not know the name of Christ to claim as Savoir? What happens to infants, fetuses, or even young children who die? Those whom are aborted, where do they go after death? God has said that all humans are born into sin. The only way to salvation is through Christ. How can an infant or fetus know Christ? For anyone who has ever lost a baby or know of someone who has lost one, what can we really say to them? What does the Bible reveal that we can use to provide comforting and reassuring words to the many women and men who have endured such agony?

Christians and non-Christians alike can carry a heavy burden of guilt and shame after an abortion, lingering throughout their entire life. Even despite the fact that God forgave someone who committed murder, conspiracy to commit murder, adultery, etc...(King David), they can not forgive themselves. The good news is there is nothing that God can not forgive (the only real unpardonable sin is not accepting Christ as Savior). But what does the Bible say about where babies go after death. Is it heaven? Surely it isn't hell, is it? If we depend upon the Word of God, and it is in the Bible, then we can definitively know for certain. Not on what people think.

How many women, and some men, have carried the excruciating weight of having had an abortion. Sometimes it is made all the worse from a few churches or people that believe that they are all headed straight for hell. However, there is nothing in the general context of the Bible that indicates that and does not reflect attributes of the Father. The Almighty said many times, "I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy". In most theological traditions, it is believed that those children who die in infancy are numbered among the redeemed. That is to say, we hope and have a certain level of confidence that God will be particularly gracious toward those who have never had the opportunity to be exposed to the gospel, such as children, infants or fetuses (He knew us in the womb He says) or even children who are too disabled to hear and understand. He said I Will, not what we think. He is the God of the living and not the dead.

As soon as God entered into a relationship with Abraham, he brought Isaac into it-when Isaac was still an infant and didn't have an understanding of what was going on. God in fact knew before Isaac was even born. Before he was even a fetus. We also see David's situation in the Old Testament when his infant child dies. Yet David is given the confidence that he will see that child again in heaven in the Psalms. That story of David and his dying child gives a tremendous consolation to parents who have lost infants to death, or to abortions, or to young children. We are not the ones to determine who God will have mercy on.

Now the point that we have to make is that infants who die are believed to be given a special dispensation of the grace of God; it is not by their innocence but by God's grace that they are received into heaven. There are great controversies that hover over the doctrine of original sin. Lutherans disagree with Roman Catholics, who disagree in turn with Presbyterians, etc., on the scope and extent of what we call original sin. Understand that the Original Sin does not refer to the first sin that was committed, but rather to the result of that-the entrance of sin into the world so that all of us as human beings are born in a fallen state. We come into this world with a sin nature, and so the baby that dies, dies as a sinful child. And when that child is received into heaven, he or she is received by grace. You may rest assured.

When David and Bathsheba lost their precious child, David realized that he could not expect to see him again in this life, but he clearly said the day will come when "I shall go to him..." (II Sam 12:23). Interestingly, in the very next verse, "...David comforted Bathsheba his wife..."(V. 24), perhaps with this same reassurance that they would both see the child again. What a joyous reunion that will be! And not there's alone! But that reunion will not happen if one has not accepted Christ as Savior [see process below]. So I pray, please pass this on to anyone who has ever dealt with such a heartbreaking issue. I hope this provides healing for whomever has ever carried around this heavy yoke of guilt and shame. Put this on His broad shoulders. Take His yoke. Your sin is forgiven. The child will yet live again.

HOW TO RECEIVE & KNOW YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE

I Admit - that I am a sinner and in need of a Savior (Rom 6:23)

I Abandon - self-effort and realize I can not be saved by my works or efforts (Acts 16:31)

I Accept freely Christ's payment for my sins, required of the Father. (John 3:16)

I Acknowledge Jesus Christ as my personal lord and Savior (Acts 4:12)

If you have just received Jesus, you have now received God's inheritance rights since you

are now a son or daughter of His and can never be lost again & live forever (John 10:28-29).

Thank you for this information Jack. I agree with Peace Maker and was always taught that if a child dies before they reach the age of accountability they will go to Heaven. Very comforting article!

What about tribes that never knew about The Bible or Jesus, do they get into heaven as well?

The Kor'an in not inspired by God, but by men, therefore is subjective and subject to error. Thanks for your comments anyway Rena.

Wait -- if God will let babies with original into heaven why not adults with sin? Why the Divine need for eternal punishment if God is supposed to be loving? Even the Koran mentions that eventually everyone is forgiven and goes to heaven (unless I got that totally wrong, which wouldn't be a first time. I don't actually have a copy of the Koran.) Seems if Jesus went through the bother of getting crucified, perhaps we should sin all we can so that Jesus can get His money's worth. Ow. I have a headache now. But you havea real gift for writing, Jack. Keep it up.

I agree with you. Very well presented.

Only God can judge what the age of accountability is. I'm sure it differs from one to another. Babies are innocent and precious and do not know right from wrong yet even though they are born with a sinful nature. No need to fear if the baby wasn't baptized yet. They go straight to heaven. Neat article!
