Do You Believe in the Power of Hypnosis?

Women Are Using Hypnosis During Childbirth

It's called "HypnoBirth" and some women are claiming it's the relief they need to endure the labor pains. One mother from Ocala, Florida says that at the worst stages of labor and delivery, she felt nothing more than a few bad cramps.

I went for hypnosis once with my sister. I fell fast asleep. Did it work for me? Not really, but does this mean it doesn't work for everyone? I have some friends who swear by it and if nothing more, it left them feeling totally relaxed.

Using the visualization techniques prior to delivery, some women claim that the Hypnobirth is the only way to go. One of the hypnotic exercises involves imagining the colors of the rainbow and associating them with various parts of the body.

"It's not so much to escape your birth and go into la, la land, but to deeply connect with what your body is doing," she said. "You need to offset the awake-alert state you are in."

It is oftentimes used in conjunction with massage by the husband to help comfort the mother and trigger endorphins - those pain killing body hormones. Soft lighting and soft music flood the environment in a peaceful setting.

There is even a HypnoBirthing Institute in Epsom, New Hampshire with offices in Florida and Arizona. In the past few years nearly 1,000 women have embraced HypnoBirth techniques to deliver which include "breathing down the baby" instead of pushing. Imagine that!

It isn't always so smooth though and sometimes even the HypnoBirth turns critical and a C-section is required. A total of 16 percent of HypnoBirthers undergo that procedure, compared to the national average of 33 percent.

Whether you believe in the merits of hypnosis or not, it's something to consider the next time you deliver. I have to tell you though, when it comes to enduring pain, I'd be asking for a shot of something to take the edge off.
