Do You Need a College Degree In Order to be Successful?

Sin Lucas
I have a confession. I don't have a college degree and I've never wanted one. I don't subscribe to the theory that having a post secondary degree will make you more successful then someone who doesn't have a degree, but what do I know (remember, I don't have a degree).

It is my assumption that people obtain degrees to get better jobs. Better jobs lead to more money and in America the more money you have the more successful you are.

So the facts (so they say), according to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, "Between 1980 and 2004, earnings increased with education for all young adults ages 25-34 who worked full-time throughout the year. Young adults with at least a bachelor's degree consistently had higher median earnings than those with less education. Moreover, for the entire population and, in general, for each subgroup, the difference between the earnings of those with at least a bachelor's degree and their peers with less education grew during this period. For example, in 1980, males with a bachelor's or higher degree earned 19 percent more than male high school completers, while in 2004 they earned 67 percent more."

So there you have it, those with college degrees go on to make mucho dinero, but no where in this survey did they mention the thousands of college graduates who don't find success in their chosen profession, regardless of having a degree. They didn't mention the college graduates who find themselves in massive, paralyzing debt due to all the student loans they've taken out over the course of 4 to 8 years. Nor do they mention the people who didn't go to college that were successful in their chosen field despite not having a degree.

Earlier today I spoke to a professional, an aspiring film maker. He is successful in every since of the word. He has a good job, a beautiful home, he is living the American dream, so I asked him, "Do you think that having a degree has made a positive impact in your life or do you feel that you could have gone just as far without it?" To my surprise his response was, "To tell you the truth I never finished high school. I've been very lucky in life with my job and success. For me it was all about my personality and making sure I surrounded myself with talented people."

What he said made perfect sense to me and it got me thinking. Do you really need a degree to be successful?

In my opinion there are many roads that lead to success and not all of those roads require you to have a degree, but before you start sending me hate mail accusing me of knocking college, just know that I'm not against higher education. I believe in education. In some instances you need a degree. I don't think that you should get to be a doctor just because you like to cut, and I don't think you should get to be a lawyer just because you speak well, know something about the law and want to get your cousin out of jail, but I also don't believe that whether or not you have a four year degree should be the only factor in determining whether you get a good job. Intelligence as well as experience should also be determining factors. I also believe that certifications are a valid way of determining if one is qualified for particular positions.

For a lot of people having a degree is important and although I feel that I've done well without a degree, I also feel that some doors are still shut to me because I don't have a degree and it's not because I don't know how to do the job, it's because in America we're taught that a post secondary education is where it's at.

We're condition to believe that to truly be successful you have to have that piece of paper to validate your intelligence and your worth and that's what degrees do, they validate your intelligence.

I know a lot of people who are successful, people that have never attended college. I'm sure if you think about it, you know someone too and if you don't, just think about the most famous college dropout of all, Bill Gates. According to his bio, he left Harvard in his junior year to devote time to Microsoft and while he's not going around doing seminars which promote dropping out of college, I'm sure he's not crying in his pillow at night screaming, "Oh GOD, if only I had that college degree I would be worth a gazillion dollars instead of the lousy billions I'm worth now."

So in conclusion, if you feel you need a degree then go get it, by all means, get that degree and I wish you all the success in the world, but don't knock people that don't have a degree and don't assume that they're less qualified or less intelligent because they don't have one.

You'd be surprised.

What a beautiful article. I am in India currently. I am not studying abroad. I decided to leave my college after slaving away for the past three years part time. I have to say that making the decision to do something that is off of the beaten path is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am learning more about culture and truth in this foreign land than I have in most of my courses. I am not knocking an education either, but if you look at the Government loan debts in the U.S it is not an unwise decision to look for the alternative. What makes you happy? Figure that out, and then go for it.

I agree with what you're writing, but work on writing it more skillfully!

A college degree does help in some way, I believe that but you dont need it at all to be successful. I am not trying to denigrate the importance of college education here. Education is still important of course but we all know that in this day in age, a college degree is now just a good thing to have and not anymore a requirement for success in life, and dont get me wrong, I am only talking as an entrepreneur here, obviously you still need a degree to be a lawyer, doctor or an engineer, but having a degree or having an MBA to start a business? I dont think it is required at all. If my daughter comes up to me after graduating from high school and tells me daddy, I want to skip college and start a business, I will tell her Lets do it, I will be your seed investor for as long as I see passion and willingness to work hard in her. A guy I know only did one semester in college (never graduated) but became a mentor to somebody who graduated from Harvard and also advised one of the top stock b

Degrees are great to have when the person sitting across from you has no clue how to assess your potential based on an interview. Even for those with degrees, not many ever reach the point where they are making 1-2M a year. Typically, those at this level are self employed and have surrendered to the act of getting a degree solely to check the block of the far less intelligent but in positions of relevance because they are in charge of money at banks and investment firms...

I am two semesters away from receiving my B.S. in Finance. I plan on finding work while preparing to either take the level I,II and III CFA exams or getting an MBA or an M.S. in Finance (haven't decided).

Currently I'm helping a friend with a business venture they are starting; they need me to do help them with the accounting and "money-side" of things. My friend is going to school for something unrelated to business and he always talks about not really needing a degree to prove intelligence. Sometimes I think that if he was sure he could make decent money, he'd drop out. If this business is remotely successful, I'm thinking he just might.

Watching my friend and his acquaintances run this business, I can see that having a degree doesn't equate to success. They don't have busines degrees (or any degree for that matter) yet they know how to hustle...how to make contacts etc. But I can also see that there are a lot of areas they don't understand (basic contract law, the best opt

Nope, I'm happy and didn't even get near a college, except to work at one. I'm not rich either, but then again that doesn't make a happy person, being rich means you just have more stuff than others. I know what it means to work for something and what needing means as opposed to wanting everything you think someone else has that you think you'll be happy with. Of course the principles I live by has attributed to my simple and happy life. I didn't read those principles in a college textbook either but instead in the greatest Book on this earth. The Bible and being taught by one of Jesus followers who out of obediance came to my door to share the truth with me. Listen to them, they too can help you to get on the path toward freedom from the "love of money" and freedom from this world (not the earth) that teaches people that getting the "American Dream" is what lifes about. When Jehovah's Witnesses come to your door, ask them "May I know the truth?"

I love the article and I completely agree with it, but I really had to laugh at some of the responses, especially from those who stated they did attend or graduate college. The numerous spelling and grammatical errors alone makes me wonder what school these people attended. I didn't get my Bachelor's degree until later in life and have only recently considered a Masters because I realized it would open up a few more doors for me. I know several people who have Master's degrees who certainly are NOT more intelligent, more successful and truthfully, any more educated than those without the degree (since there are many online schools now willing to hand out a Master's degree as long as you are willing to pay the tuition). The truly successful are those who are willing to work for it.

I work for a company that had many different job titles within the company one of which is a courier you had to take a test and pass to even be considered for the job I took the test and failed and 2 yrs later the same company got sued for this so called "competency test" and it was dropped from the evaluation process of this job they now give train ppl reguardless of education level the moral of my story is if you want a career to be a doctor go to school there is no way around it you can't exactly learn everything you need from just doing it but if you dont need a degree and can get trained through alternative means then do it. I hear a lot of faculty members saying school is great for you which it is but the truth is schools make money it is a business and as of july 1 2010 the federal govt will control all funding so with said if you are thinking of going school it would be wise to decide on what career you want and seriously explore you option college is not the only option with a
