Scientists Prove Dogs Dream when They Sleep

Have you ever watched a dog while it is sleeping? Have you watched as its legs begin to move back and forth as if it is running? Did you wonder if the dog is dreaming? Now you can stop guessing whether or not your suspicions where correct or not; scientists have proven that dogs dream.

Dreaming, in neither dogs nor humans, is not fully understood. It is thought to be a way of processing, re-organizing and storing the events and experiences of the day. There are many similarities between dogs and man. According to veterinarian, Dr. Nicolas Dodman, the similarities "between the two species ...are compelling. We're 95 percent identical genetically and physically (...down to ...our common blood pigment, hemoglobin). Our brains are similar, our neurochemistry is the same, and our reflexes and memory are "wired" in like manner."

  • Dogs can have nightmares; when this happens, call their name and pat them gently.

My dogs always ran in their sleep but on their side so they never moved, chasing an immaginary rabbit or squirrel.

Dear Curious, the stages of sleep were broken down into the two main stages of sleep SWS and REM sleep. Yes there are 5 stages of sleep. The first is a very light stage of sleep. The second, eye movements stop and brain waves slow. Stage 3 is where delta waves are interspersed with slower faster wave patterns of sleep (measured by EEG). The fourth stage is the delta wave sleep, then REM.

The article was set up as it was for simplification purposes. The sources of information are listed at the conclusion of the article.
