I must admit I was taught as a child to fear God. "If you don't behave God's gonna punish you." was a regular mantra in my education. As I matured I fought this idea making many stupid decisions that I regret today. I have learned as I trudge my road to destiny that my God is a lot more understanding of my faults and character defects.
I had to go to the basement of the church to find my God. Today I believe there are many churches that God wouldn't feel comfortable on the main floor. Remember in the Bible stories God always was with the drunks, whores, other sinners and the children. Some say it is because they need God most. Others proclaim God understands these folks best because God has helped them open the gates of Hell and return to life. I feel it is because we don't fear God. We embrace God's love from necessity. (ie: No could love us as we were, except God) God was with the children because no one had taught them to hate yet.
The God of my understanding is like the "Norman Rockwell" grandfather. God has the respect He deserves and is understanding motivated by Love. God knows what I need and what I desire. God also has taught me that when I feel "This is the worse thing that could happen to a nice guy like me" ...I was wrong. God has better plan and I need to get out of the way. My God has a sense of humor too. I tell God how I think and God laughs. I think that's how the acronym S.H.I.T. Began (Simply How I Think).
Let me close with the beginning words of a song from my youth. "Be not afraid for I am with you..." I know it's a song written by a Jesuit that was inspired by God from the Bible. I also know today that I do not fear God. I know God as a friend. I know God lives everywhere and I found Him in a church basement. I was told by an Elder-Statesman...When a door closes God will open another soon although it maybe Hell in the hallway getting there....Mizpah ;-}}>

Post a CommentI think fearing God has to do with respecting and reverencing Him, not so much being afraid of Him. "Perfect love casts out fear," and God IS perfect love.
I won't say I found God, to find something it means that it was at some point in time missing. I haven't been a devote follower but after almost dying I have to believe that there is definitely some type of higher power. The odds were so against me that the ICU team called for a priest before they called for a surgeon. When someone tells you that, you have a whole new level of respect for things.

I love a title that evokes an immediate answer.....no! Just great respect.
Great work.
Hmm...I don't remember those stories from the bible. But...this is heartfelt.
I absolutely agree with you.
Nope. I don't fear Him. I expect he'll be harsh for some of the things I've done but I believe in a loving Father God; not a vengeful, hateful one.
