Do You Have a Filipino Girlfriend You Met Online?

Alice Santos
I remember we had read this story in high school called "Pina San Ka Pupunta?" (Pina where are you going?). It's a story of an ambitious young woman looking for a rich husband. She finds out that her favorite actress is living the good life after she married an Australian man. She decides the only way she could reach her ambitions is if she marries a foreigner, preferably white since they are all rich. She made an American penpal and started to exchanging letters. He finally came over to her province, got her pregnant and left. Her dreams of marry a rich man and living the American dream was crushed. The story ended with a self induced abortion. Now what was the moral of that story?

It makes me uncomfortable to think that sometimes a husband isn't always considered a lover. To some women a husband is more of a financial source whom you have sex with to keep him happy.

The reason most of these women want to become a mail order brides is that they believe that if they marry an foreigner especially if he's American or European then they also marry rich then they won't ever have to work for the rest of their lives. Other reasons aren't so superficial. For example: instead of being shipped off to Japan to become a prostitute some women marry a foreigner to support their family back home.

In this day and age you don't have simply write letters to each other thanks to the internet there are a bunch of lonely, aged Americans for any Filipina girl to find. You could see each other through webcam and if she's really desperate for you to send her a few bucks she'll take off her clothes.

My Aunt found her now husband that way, well she didn't take off her clothes I meant she met him over the internet. Soon after they sent letters to each other. When my aunt told me that she had a penpal I didn't think she meant future husband. I was thinking that it was most likely another female and they were exchanging packages with pictures, stationary and other girly things. When I asked for a penpal she told me that I was too young to get married. When I told her that I thought penpals were friends she replied 'yeah right'.

It's very uncommon for men to seek a foreign woman for the same reasons. Traditionally culture has told us that men have to be the provider and women have to find the one that provides for them and it seems that foreign men can give women more of what they want.

Even though these women wanted money in the first place the majority of women I know actually do end up fall in love with their foreign husband. But if you have a girlfriend you met online from the Philippines you should still be cautious. It's best to know her intentions more. If she just keeps asking for your money without intending to ever be committed to you dump her. If she wants to get married met with her face to face and have a serious talk with her. Discuss with her how things will be like being married to you and what you expect of her. Be realistic and tell her to be realistic to, hopefully she'll understand and you'll live together happily ever after...or she'll become a US citizen and dump you.

Sad sad reasons why a lot of races look down on us... we may have lesser porns compared to other asian races but the tag of gold digging, dangerous, heartbreaker hurts the same way. I despise those women who are too desperate to find and hook up with any foreigners for financial convenience...because those honest filipinas are affected...we'll all be generalize no matter how good the intentions are...

Thanks for writing this article, I agree! I've been telling both my American and Filipina friends the same thing for years! Ironic, though, that the ad AC chooses to associate with this article is FilipinaHeart.com, which only serves to perpetuate this issue.

have underlying reasons and gains for either side. Some are truly love and interest in each other (beyond looks). However, one need only look at the divorce rate in the US to see that it doesn't take a poor girl from a developed nation to have ulterior motives beyond love.
