Parents know that they need to get their high school graduate a graduation gift, but where do you start? This will depend on the individual. Do you buy the most extravagant present, or should the gift be practical? Is your grad going off to college or taking a year off before entering college?
If your grad is heading right from high school to college, their needs are practical items that will help them get set up in their new dorm room. They also need comfy things to help prevent them from becoming homesick. The transaction from home life to dorm life can be a big change, emotionally.
Below are some graduation gift ideas. These can help you get your creative juices flowing and maybe provide answers for that basic question. What kind of graduation gift do I get?
The most important thing any parent can do is to put thought and love into your gift.
1. Car.
If your high school student didn't have a car, graduation is a good time. If they are going off to college and need a way around campus, a car is a must. You probably will have to spend some time with he/she and explain the important of regular maintenance. A car is an expensive gift, so consider it wisely.
2. Trip
A lot of student's dream of touring Europe, after graduation. This is a very expensive gift. You need to ask yourself, is my child responsible enough for this gracious gift? This type of gift requires lots of thought on your part as a parent.
3. Computer
College bound students will be in need of a computer. It's almost impossible for a student now a day, to get along without one. Students with laptops use them for note taking in lectures. If you have one at home you can send with your student, that's fine. But if your in the marker for one, a laptop could be better than a desktop, but either way, it should be as compact as possible. Be sure to shop around and find the best model. The computer will be used quite a lot, so nothing fancy is needed.
4. Cheap Dorm Room Furniture and Necessities
If your student is entering a dorm, they are impersonal, boring spaces. Inexpensive, practical furniture can make a freshman's dorm room much more comforting. They also need household things like several sets of towels, a set of sheets, warm blankets, coffee maker, clothes hamper or laundry basket, hangers, small ironing board, iron and plastic cups and plates. The newest item is a small fridge. The dorm information your student will receive will tell you the size to purchase.
5. Gift Basket
You could put together a gift basket filled with necessities such as, notebooks, paper, pens, highlighters, post-its, computer accessories, stationary, stamps and a prepaid phone card so he or she can always call home.
6. Books
Books are a very personal gift. Consider choosing something that pertains to the field of study, or something fun to read. For example, choose something from their favorite author or their favorite novel in hardback.
7. Jewelry
If you have a favorite heirloom that you want to pass down, graduation is an excellent time to do it. You might even choose an elegant pair of earrings for a young woman, or a watch or gold tie tack for a young man.
8. Scrapbook
If you have time to put together a scrapbook, do it. This makes a personal gift for your child. Compile pictures, report cards, certificates of achievements - academic, sports and clubs, picture of high school graduation and announcement, and other memorabilia that your child can take with them and remember days long past.
9.Gift Certificates
Gift certificates are sometimes considered impersonal but students love them. Purchase a gift certificate from your child favorite store, or even multiple stores. Consider bookstores, electronic stores, clothing stores, restaurants, and music stores.
