Do You Know What Your Nutritional Needs Are?

Emma Geller
Nutrition, as it applies to us daily, refers to the food and beverages we eat and drink and what is really needed to maintain a healthy body. More and more people are becoming aware of how nutrition affects their well being, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the USDA and the FDA, who set guidelines for what we need and require labeling on our foods so we know what we're eating.

Do you understand what your nutritional requirements are and do you know how to fulfill those requirements? How nutritionally valuable is the food you eat? Overall nutrition is often overlooked as people focus on specific types of nutrition, such as fats or cholesterols or sugars, losing sight of the bigger picture. We're always hearing about vitamin fortified this and sugar free that, but rarely do we hear about the whole picture of our nutritional needs.

Determining how much nourishment you need, how much exercise your body requires, and the goals you need to set for yourself to reach true wellness is important to your overall happiness in life. Caloric needs, nutritional needs, physical needs, and education about what all of these are and how to determine them are all very important things. There is a massive amount of information out there, which you can find by visiting the library, fitness club, or doctor, but it's your choice to decide on good health or bad.

Providing your body with the essential nutrients that it needs comes from knowing what those needs are and how to fulfill them. Educating ourselves about what our individual and overall needs are, then striving to meet those needs, is what proper nutrition is all about.

Usually, our vitamin and mineral needs are far greater than our caloric needs, as most of us eat more calories than we should and rarely get all the vitamins and minerals we need from those calories because of their source. So we turn to manufactured vitamins to fill the gap.

Gaining useful knowledge about nutrition, applicable to real life, everyday situations, is difficult. Women's needs differ from those of men, children need different things than adults do, larger builds need more than smaller ones, and so forth. It can be mind boggling, but there is help out there to get you on track.

Finding a qualified nutritionist, holistic health practitioner, or similar person is a great way to get started. Reading, studying, and learning about what nutrition is and how you can apply it everyday is what really matters, though. Educating yourself so you can help yourself is key to having success in true fitness and well being.
