You can find consignment stores by looking in your yellow pages. It is probably a good idea to visit the stores first in person to see if your clothing would be appropriate. Some stores want only high-end designers or big name brands. Other consignment stores want attractive stylish clothing but they care less who the designer is. So check out the store before applying to consign your clothes.
All clothing should be cleaned and pressed or ironed before you bring it to the consignment store. You will need to make an appointment to bring your clothing in. While you are there, the store manager or employee will look over your clothing with a fine-toothed comb (literally) to see if there are any missing buttons or torn hems. Clothing needs to be in excellent condition and gently used. A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn't offer the item to your best friend, then it probably wouldn't be a good idea to bring it into a consignment store. People want clothing that looks nice, now that just makes sense - doesn't it?
Every consignment store has different rules. Your basic rule of thumb is that when you consign your clothes you get a percentage of the sale. Some stores give you a larger amount than others. At some stores this percentage may decrease as the months go by. As the months go by, your clothing may also get marked down in price to lure customers to buy it. Some stores also consider clothing items "donated" after a certain amount of time - like six months or a year. Check the contract they give you to sign and ask questions. Ask questions before you sign everything to be sure that you understand the terms.
There are many benefits to selling your clothing at a consignment store. If you have lost or gained weight and your dress size is different, this is a great way to make money while cleaning out your closet. If you are someone who shops a lot, you may have many clothes that you just don't wear and consignment can be a great way to earn more money to buy even more clothes. If your taste in clothing has changed this is also a great way to clear out your closet.
Consigning your clothes is easy and fun, and a great way to earn extra money!
