Do Men Really Discuss Their Relationships with Other Men?

Karl Withakay
Men aren't generally like women in this respect. We don't gossip very much and we don't fill our friends in on every fine detail of our relationship. However, we do discuss our relationships with other men. Most of the time, it's with our good friends. I'll use some examples from personal experience.

When my first wife and I were having problems, many times, I confided in my best friend. Why? For the same reasons that women confide in their close friends. To get their opinion or advice concerning an issue with the relationship.

Long before my first wife and I divorced, her and I were having some problems. I would discuss with my best friend nearly everything that was going on. I wouldn't really volunteer this information though. He's known me since we both were about eight years old. He can tell when something is bothering me or when something is on my mind. He'd ask me what was wrong or what was bothering me and I'd simply tell him. He'd give me some advice or his thoughts on the matter along with is blunt honesty. I think everyone needs a friend like that. Someone who doesn't just tell them what they want to hear, but tells them what they honestly think.

Usually these talks are at a card table, at the local bar, or on the golf course in most cases. These type of places are where we feel most comfortable discussing relationships with other men. These are the type of places that are usually male dominated. The talks usually don't occur at family functions like cookouts and picnics.

The style is a bit different than that of how the women discuss their relationship with their friends. If a guy talks about his marriage woes with his buddy, it's not likely that his friend will put down the wife. It's not our style. We won't give her the cold shoulder either. We are there to offer some help to our friend. We are not there to form an alliance of the men against the women.

So ladies, let it be known. If you and your husband are having problems, his good friend or friends know about it. And if you rocked his world last night like a porn star, his friends know about that too.
