Do Your Own Maintenance: How to Change Your Air Filter

An air filter in your car has a large impact on performance. It keeps the air flow steady, which is every important when you have a computer-controlled fuel injection system. By keeping your air filter clean, you will be able to increase the gas mileage of your vehicle, and increase the life of your engine. It is important to check your filter at every oil change, and based on manufacturer's recommendations found in your owners' manual.
In order to change you air filter, you will need a new filter, and a socket set or a screwdriver, depending on the model of your car.
Finding the air filter is generally very simple. It is generally in a plastic box located next to the engine with a large hose coming off of the side. The cover is the box is held in with small bolts, screws, or clips that are easily removed. It is usually easily accessible, as it is a regular maintenance item.
Take the old filter out and look for debris, dust, down, or other visible signs that it may be clogged. If it is a reusable filter, often rinsing and drying it will do the trick. Otherwise, replace the filter with the one that was purchased from your auto parts store. Replace the top of the box, and you should be ready to go!
