Do You Pay Your Kids for Good Grades?

Should You Pay or Offer Rewards?

Jenn Greenleaf
It's no mystery many parents across the board have paid their children for good grades for years. My parents never paid me with money, rewards or other incentives, but that's a different story. I've had many friends, though, who were. Back when I was in school, I thought it was a good idea and wish I could receive some monetary rewards. I did my best either way, but I tend to wonder if that would be the case for all school-aged children?

My husband and I both believe in rewarding our children whenever they do something good, and that includes getting good grades. We used to offer monetary rewards, but we no longer do that. Instead, we offer other incentives for them to work toward:
-- A trip to the bookstore or extra time at the library
-- Their choice of what to eat for dinner on a specific day for a specific number of weeks (i.e. they'll get to choose every Wednesday for four weeks or something like that)
-- Their choices of what to have for dessert on a specific day for a specific number of weeks
-- They get to stay up one hour later for a week (or a specific number of days)

While we wonder if rewarding is misconstrued as bribery, we've seen positive results in our efforts to teach the kids they need to do their best no matter what lies ahead. Sometimes, for whatever reason, this is no reward. Sometimes, there is more of a reward (for example, if we can afford to go the movies it would be their choice what we saw).

As the kids get older (they're in third and fourth grade now), they're going to face many challenges in their educational lives. We'd like to keep rewarding them to keep things positive, rather than putting a negative tag (like bribery) on the decision.

I did a little research focused on paying children for good grades:
