Do I Need Pet Health Insurance?

Evan Nash
Pet health insurance started out as somewhat of a joke over 80 years ago in Sweden and people have dismissed it ever since. Almost nobody has given it a second thought as a necessary expense and there is a large percentage of the population that doesn't even know it exists. The idea of pet health insurance is almost funny to a lot of us, but for serious pet owners that treat their pet as another family member it is a great option.

How many times have you taken your pet to the veterinarian for what you thought was a routine checkup and walked out with a large bill in hand? Would it not feel pretty good to you to know that some of, if not all, of that check you wrote would be reimbursed to you later? This is what pet health insurance does, it gives you the ability to recoup some of the funds that you lost unexpectedly when an unforeseen circumstance arose.

To be clear, pet health insurance will not cover all conditions and treatments that your pet could possibly encounter. This coverage is just like any other insurance coverage in that it has exclusions for certain illnesses, conditions or injuries that are not covered. This all has to do with the insurance company trying to make a profit and that is exactly the way they should run their business.

The deciding factor for you should be in your research of what your breed needs when you begin your life with your pet. Some pets never get sick or injured and live happy lives with only routine checkups to their doctors. Other pets are a drain on the family economic dynamic as they continue to come up with one condition after another that breaks the family bank.

If you are an owner of the latter type of pet then you should seriously consider getting pet health insurance to cover your pet. The premiums tend to be very manageable and they will help you avoid any potentially crippling bills from your veterinarian. The ultimate deciding factor for any pet owner considering pet health insurance should be what they think they can afford if something goes wrong.

When you ask this question if you happen to come back to the fact that a monthly premium would be more of a waste than paying for an unexpected situation nobody could blame you. You have to make decisions in your life about what is best for you and your pet and making this decision would be perfectly acceptable.

I generally think that pet health insurance is a waste of money unless you find one with more than 75 percent payback, because think about it, unless you have the most clumsy dog on the planet, you'll need emergency care, what.... once or twice in the dog's LIFE? If you pay the insurance costs (say 30 dollars a month) for the dog's life (15 years) you'll pay 5400 dollars right out of the starting gate. Then say the dog somehow falls off a cliff and breaks his back and requires a 20,000 dollar repair surgery and the company pays you back 40% of the cost.... you end up paying 12,000 dollars plus the 5,400 you paid the company that's 17,400. In essence you pay 5,400 to save 2,600 dollars in your dog's lifetime. It's just bull if you ask me.
