Do Prepaid Cell Phones Really Work?

John Koren
What is the difference between a normal cell phone plan and one that is already prepaid? They are very similar but they do have some differences.

One difference is where you purchase the prepaid cell phones versus other cell phones. Most of the time you purchase cell phones at the cell phone company store. The Prepaid ones may be purchased at other stores such as Radio Shack and Walmart.

How do they work? While regular cell phones work by having set plans for each month, prepaid phones are more like phone cards. Instead of getting billed each month, you buy a card with the minutes you would like. In some ways it is a little better because you will not end up with any surprising cell phone bills. Since you will have already paid ahead of time then your cell phone bill is already taken care of. However, if you use up all of your minutes by the end of the month, you cannot use your phone at all until you go in and purchase some more. For emergencies that would not be a good thing.

How else are prepaid cell phones different? They are also different because many times you do not have very much choice. When you go to a cell phone company, you are given a whole bunch of choices of phones.

You also have a very wide range of plans that you can pick and choose and even blend. It all depends on your needs. The prepaid cell phones, you do not have much choice in phones. You also do not have much choice with your plan. Yes, there are a lot of different prepaid cell phone plans, but you cannot mix and match them like you can with a regular cell phone.

Which type of cell phone is better? It really depends on you. Prepaid cell phones are great if all you want is a phone that you do not use too often. Prepaid phones are usually very popular with elderly people. Why is that? Most elderly people do not use a cell phone as often as others do. Part of the reason is because many people use their cell phone for work. That is not to say prepaid phones aren't good for anyone, because they are. These phones are great if you are not an avid cell phone user. Regular cell phones are better for work use. They are also better if you use text messaging and other cell phone extras.

Which one is cheaper? That also depends on you. Prepaid phones are paid for up front so you know how much you will spend. Regular cell phones do have an average fee that is based on your plan, but the bill does fluctuate from time to time. With regular phones you also have to keep in mind that all plans are different from other plans. Prepaid phones are better if you are on a strict budget.

Great article. I've heard that most of the people in Europe have prepaid cell phones. Prepaid cell phones are also great for people who want to save money.
