Do You Really Need Cable?

Robin Neorr
Let me start out by saying that I love television! At one point in my life I even worked for a television station.

So how can a girl with such love for television survive without cable or satellite TV? Easy, you don't need it! Network television is really all the television that you need.

The majority of cable television is over-hyped reality TV that in the end does nothing but lower your I.Q. level. Harsh, but true. I mean do you really care, in your heart, who Brett Michaels dates or who Flavor Flav ends up with? Is Tila Tequila really important in your everyday life and how many times can you watch a house be remodeled? These shows are mindless entertainment that are taking away from the precious time you have to spend time with you family or expand your mind by reading a book.

Now I am not saying that reality television is bad, I mean I love shows like Big Brother and Top Model. Mindless television does have a place, it can help you kick back, relax, and relish in faux realities. The problem is reality television can be like crack, addictive. If you have unlimited access to reality television on cable and you have that television addict personality you might find your life revolves around MTV?

To ensure that television doesn't control your life, dial it back a bit and get rid of the cable. You will see it's not as bad as you think it is going to be. Yes there are going to be times when there is absolutely nothing on that you are interested in watching, but you can use this down time to read a book, play with your children, or go outside for a walk.

Getting rid of cable television will be a huge weight off your shoulder. You will have so much more free time, and you will be able to watch and enjoy network television with new respect and new appreciation.

Giving up Cable or Satellite television will also free up your wallet. With the rising gas prices we all know that this is a good thing! Just think at $50 a month cable television is costing you $600 a year. You can find a new use for this money.

I challenge you to give up cable for one month, you will see how much your life changes by not being a slave to the television, and I guarantee that you will probably never go back.

Great article. This article really speaks the truth about why cable isn't necessary. Compared to network television, cable has more reality shows and many of them shouldn't even exist.

We just got cable for the first time two months ago. We never would have but it was cheaper to get it in the package than buy the telephone and internet service separately. We don't watch t v that often to warrent it.

We got rid of satellite and we got rid of the local paper , reading it on line, I do love the lifetime channel though like Charlie.

I don't need my satellite. But I am happier with it. Plus, it helps to bring in my local channels. I live in the country and the antenna can only do so much with all these trees surrounding me. Will this new converter that is coming out make a difference to those who use only antennas? I hope so.

I need my cable. I grew up with it and am sad when I don't have it. Maybe I need some help, too. :p Great article.

I don't have cable and I'm quite happy without it. I'm not all that familiar with programmes in this country anyway, so I don't miss what I don't have.

I like cable for the discovery channel and court tv, but short of that I am fine without it. Great article :-)

True television is not a necessity. We use it for weather, cooking shows, and now buy movies and that is cheaper than going to the theatre. Our cable is a bundled thing with the phone and computer and is a good deal for us as a family. Good article in this day of choices.
