Do You Remember Your Dreams After Awakening from Sleep?

A Rich and Sometimes Lucid Dreaming Life

Karan Moses Robinson
I have a rich dreaming life. I dream in color, in detail and sometimes dream lucidly, which means being aware that a dream is just a dream while it's happening.

I recently wrote about going to Price's store in Clover as a child, and soon after found myself dreaming about the store. In the dream I walked in the front door and out the back without stopping or speaking to anyone, but as I went out the back I turned to examine the screen door to see if it had changed over the decades. I then looked at the gravel on the back drive with dismay, remembering how hard it had been on a child's bare feet.

I was hesitant to write about dreaming because it's a subject not always taken seriously, even though we all do it. Some people say they don't dream, but do they dream and just not remember it?

Elias Howe's Invention Came From A Dream

I've read the story of how Elias Howe, Jr. who patented the first proper lockstitch sewing machine ever, got the idea from a dream about Indians. I've read two versions of the dream; a Childcraft Encyclopedia told the story of Indians throwing spears with holes at the end of them, giving him the idea for the needle.

But according to Alex I. Askaroff's "Home of the Sewalot Site" website, in his dream, Howe watched Indians shoot arrows through cloth and then draw the threads through. Upon awakening, he rushed to his workshop to work on the sewing machine, and ultimately became a wealthy man.

Whatever the details were, it appears the idea came from a dream. Howe had been working on the needle for years, so he must have had the idea in his mind; the dream just helped him to see the obvious.

What Do My Daughters Dream?

I often wonder what my daughters are dreaming, but since both are mentally disabled I have no way of knowing. Lindsay doesn't have the vocabulary to respond, and when I ask Megan she just grins and says she doesn't know.

I've wanted to get into Lindsay's head so much that I've dreamed I was Lindsay. In the dream as Lindsay, I had a seizure and people were trying to help me, and I wanted to be left alone, simply because people didn't understand what it was like. Of course, I was actually in my own head, not hers.

Common Dreams

I think most people can identify with common dreams such as flying or having all their teeth fall out. I dream quite often of spending hours in the grocery store, even though I have someone waiting on me. Actually, that sometimes happens in real life, but thankfully, not for hours.

Answers to complex situations and formulas make up the largest part of my dreams, although my writing career started by writing about my vivid dreams and I continue to do so. dreams are similar to making movies for me. I have the precise script and scenes vividly displayed, making it very easy to write about them. Great article!

I usually do. It's easier to remember right when i wake up. If i have time to 'wake up' fully, and lay in bed for a little bit I remember them all day. [like on the weekends] My dreams are usually odd and funny!

I usually remember my dreams. And that's good when I dream about a hot guy! I'm sure your girls dream, they just can't express their thoughts to tell you.

I rarely remember my dreams. I am more apt to remember pieces of nightmares :( interesting read!

You should cut out all the PCP you're taking and see if the lucid dreams continue.

    I kid.

Sometimes I remember my dreams and sometimes I don't.

I rarely remember my dreams but I have awoken with answers to things that were perplexing me when I fell asleep, so I do believe the unconscious mind works while we are sleeping.

I have lucid dreams all the time to the point that I have to make sure I am in reality when I first wake up. I have read that the dream state is considered an alternate reality just as valid as the awakened state. For people who do not have lucid dreams they may be able to do so by taking Melatonin as a sleep aid since that is a side effect of Melatonin.

Interesting article. I have astonishingly vivid dreams, not only in full color, but with all five senses intact (last night, for instance, I was choosing a pair of black leather gloves and could both feel and smell the leather). Fascinating things, dreams.
