Do You Thank God? Should You?

Sherry Tomfeld
I believe in God and turn to Him daily. I call out in fear and need and I ask for blessings. Somewhere along the way, I also have made it a point to thank God. What am I thanking Him for? Everything. Good bad, pretty, ugly, I thank God for it all. Do you? Should you?

My Mom, who is 78 years young, fell the other day. Her lip and nose were banged up. She was talking to someone and said "thank God"..the person looked at her and wondered why she would thank God since she did get banged up. Rather surprised, my mom told the fellow that she thanked God profusely that she didn't get knocked out (she was outside in the freezing cold) and that she didn't break any bones. Ah, there's the rub. Even in bad situations we can find things to thank and praise God for.

I have fibromyalgia and when it hit me, I was on the couch for over a year. I couldn't understand all the freaky nerves shorting out or the total fatigue or the pain. I was always a hard worker and suddenly found myself totally inept at everything. I was a very, very impatient person. Over the months and years I too have found the blessings in my illness. I am now more patient than I ever was. The illness gave me plenty of time to get to know God and myself. I've never been the same person since I got sick, and that's been a huge blessing.

Did you ever pray for good grades, a pay raise, good weather, safety? The list goes on and on of things people pray for. How many times do we say or hear the phrase "thank God"! Is it a passing statement that has no real personal thanks to God involved? How much would your earthly father or friend do for you if you never thanked them sincerely? Would there be a point at which they would stop helping you? Should it be any different with God? God told us he was a jealous God.

I find the more that I interact with God the better life is. Do I get everything I pray for? No. And that's alright with me. I always pray for God's will to be done. After all, God knows the final outcome to everything. I don't. My wisdom doesn't even exist next to His. Learning to trust God and appreciate all of the blessings He gives me every day has changed me forever. Learning to sincerely thank God for everything has made me appreciate Him even more.

Learning to thank God even in the worst of times is a worthy pursuit, something that takes spiritual awareness, and something that is humbling yet somehow rewarding.

Good article. I taught my children to give thanks for what they do have, including good health and the love of family and friends.

Jesus and I have a pact we made it a long time ago, so when I say thank you it is always directed to Jesus and my late husband.

There's always a silver lining to every situation. Learning to roll with the punches will make living with God's plan for you so much easier. It's easy to give advice though. Doing this isn't always easy, but then again life isn’t easy sometimes either. Finding gratitude in the toughest of times keeps us in touch with God and what is really important in life.

Thank you for the great reminder that God is not our personal vending machine. He is GOD.

Thanks for the dose of inspiration today and a great reminder to all to always be thankful! I always say, it could be much worse, so be thankful for what you have.
