Do You Think You're Being Lied To?

Chances Are You're Right

Ever looked at someone while they were telling you something and thought to yourself, "this sure doesn't seem like the truth, I wonder if they're lying?". It happens often and there are a few simple ways to tell if someone is trying to pull one over on you. If you are un-aware of the persons normal reactions and body language then it will be harder to know if they are lying. But if you are around this person on a daily basis and you know they never do any of these things while they are speaking, it is safe to say they are probably trying to get out of something.

Watch their movements - Their physical actions will be generally less than normal. Does this person usually talk with their hands and now their hands are by their side? Do they seem unusually stiff and uneasy?

Keep your eyes on them - A liar will move their eyes around a lot. Most of the time when someone is lying they will unknowingly look up and to the right. If you catch this, it's a surefire sign they are lying. But be careful. A lot of people know their eyes are a give away and will stare straight into your eyes while they lie away. Watch for other signals if this is happening and you still think they are lying.

If they are staring at you and you notice their pupils are changing, this is a good indication of a lie. Because of the adrenalin rush they are experiencing their pupils will usually dilate.

Some liars will touch areas of their face as they are lying - scratching their nose or touching their lips for example. I knew a girl who would play with her bottom lip when she was lying. She was not even aware of it.

Listen to them - is their voice varying in tone compared to how they would normally hold a conversation with you? You can usually tell when someone is feeling uneasy by the way their voice changes.

Pay attention to how they are standing or sitting. Liars often feel uncomfortable being directly face on with someone they are talking to. If they sit sideways and don't turn their head to look at you, you can probably venture to guess they are lying to you.

What's in their hands? Liars tend to play with things in their possession - purse, bracelet, cell phone, hair, necklace, etc. If they are fidgeting a lot and they don't normally, it could be a good sign. They may also try to "hide" themselves by putting something in between the two of you. This could be as simple as placing a cup on the table in front of you. They are just trying to "block off" your suspicion.

Are they quick to get defensive? Liars usually go on the defensive if they so much as think you are going to accuse them.

Often times a liar will try to change to subject subtly. Stay on your toes during the conversation and if they try to change the subject, gently bring it back and see how they react.

These experiences will not happen for everyone, and if you think someone is lying it is best to watch for several of these things to happen. And the golden rule is; always trust your gut and your instincts. If you feel you are being lied to, you are probably right.
