Do You Need Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

James Hamel
You are an upstanding member of society who takes your driving privilege very seriously, and you pride yourself on your ability to keep yourself out of accidents. You may have even taken a defensive driving course to help lower your auto insurance premiums. But car insurance is probably relatively easy to afford for you since your driving record is pretty much spotless.

All of the above may be true, but unfortunately there are other motorists out there on our nation's roads and highways. Some are true menaces to motorized transportation and have lengthy records filled with accidents and traffic violations. A run in at the wrong place at the wrong time could prove calamitous for you should you get hit by some irresponsible individual.

But the "hit" from one of these drivers could be much worse than the one that happens at the time of the accident. So often the most irresponsible drivers are the ones that most need car insurance yet because of their records they cannot afford it. Many states require that drivers have car insurance but enforcement of said laws is difficult at best.

What you need to get yourself through a situation like this is uninsured motorist coverage as part of your car insurance plan. It comes into effect if you are in an accident where the other driver is at fault but has no insurance coverage to pay for your expenses and bills that resulted from the accident.

Many drivers carry coverage amounts equal to their personal liability limit amount listed in their own personal car insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage can help pay for your medical bills and the bills for the people riding in the car with you, and it can also pay for any damage to personal property resulting from the accident. In some states, all of this would be included in your collision coverage by law, so check with your own personal agent first.

Also keep in mind that most uninsured motorist insurance coverage plans will come into play if the other motorist has too little insurance to cover the damages to you, your car or your property. As the laws in many states only require minimal insurance, this can be a very helpful feature at a time when you desperately need it.

That's the thing about car insurance. You never really know when, how or why you are going to need it, but in order to protect your financial and personal stability, you have to cover all of your bases. It's a crazy world full of crazy drivers out there, so buying the peace of mind that comes from uninsured motorist car insurance coverage is a wise move.
